Cryokinesis

Also called Ice Manipulation, Ice Generation, Cold Control

Cryokinesis is control over ice and cold. The important split is between characters who project cold and characters who remove heat — the second group is far more dangerous, because heat absorption works in a vacuum, ignores insulation and scales with the energy available in the environment.

How it works

There are three distinct mechanics sold under the same label.

Projection users create and throw ice. This is the common, low-ceiling version — Sub-Zero, Captain Cold with his gun. It is bounded by how much ice the user can make.

Absorption users pull thermal energy out of their surroundings. Killer Frost is the clearest example. This version gets stronger in a hot environment, which inverts the usual counter, and it can kill without ever forming ice.

Thermal manipulation is the top tier and is rarely written properly. Iceman at his Omega level is not making ice; he is altering the thermal state of matter, converting ambient moisture and reforming his own body from it. That is why he survives being shattered and why his ceiling is written far above other ice users.

How it scales

  1. Projection

Creates and throws ice. Bounded by output volume.

  2. Construct

Shapes ice into functional objects and structures. Gray Fullbuster's Ice-Make, split into static and dynamic forms.

  3. Absorption

Removes heat rather than adding cold. Works in enclosed spaces and against opponents with no thermal defence.

  4. Thermal state

Alters the energy state of matter itself and reconstitutes the user's own body from ambient moisture. Omega-level Iceman.

Who has cryokinesis

Across 4 universes. This list crosses publishers — something no single wiki can do, because every franchise keeps its own separate database.

The feat ledger

Every entry cites the work it comes from. Feat means it was shown in the work; Statement means a character or narrator said it. Nothing here is a fan estimate unless it is tagged Calc.

Iceman — Classified as an Omega-level mutant on the basis that his power is thermal manipulation, not ice creation

Statement Uncanny X-Men · Earth-616

Shoto Todoroki — Ice output is capped by his own falling body temperature, forcing him to alternate with his fire side to keep fighting

Limits

  • Projection users need moisture; a genuinely dry environment throttles them.
  • Ice constructs are brittle — strength-tier opponents break them trivially.
  • Shoto Todoroki's ice is limited by his own body temperature, one of the few explicitly stated physiological caps on the power in fiction.
  • Equipment-based cold, like Captain Cold's gun, fails the moment the equipment does.

Counters

  • Sustained heat, which is why fire users are the standard matchup.
  • Opponents who do not rely on liquid water or normal metabolism.
  • Speed — most ice constructs take a visible beat to form.

Questions

Is Iceman really Omega-level?

Yes. Marvel classifies Iceman as an Omega-level mutant, and the reasoning is that his power is thermal manipulation rather than ice creation. He converts ambient moisture, reforms his body after being destroyed, and has no stated upper limit on the energy he can move.

Who wins, a fire user or an ice user?

Setting decides it more than power level. Fire beats ice in open environments with fuel and air. Ice beats fire in enclosed spaces, underwater and in vacuum, where heat absorption still works and combustion does not.
