Sand Manipulation

Also called Psammokinesis, Sand Control

Sand manipulation controls granular matter. Its real advantage is that sand is simultaneously a shield, a weapon and a body — a user who becomes sand cannot be cut, and one who armours in it does not need to dodge.

How it works

Ambient users move sand that is present, which makes the environment decisive.

Generative users produce it — Gaara's sand is stored and carried precisely so he is never without it, which is the single best-designed detail in the power.

Somatic users are made of it. A body of sand parts around a blade, which is why the counters are always about binding rather than cutting: water, oil, and anything that makes grains stick.

The tier above is compression — sand crushed to glass or stone, which converts a defensive power into a lethal one.

How it scales

  1. Ambient

Moves sand that is already present.

  2. Generative

Produces or carries its own supply.

  3. Somatic

The user's body is sand; cutting does nothing.

  4. Compressive

Crushes sand into stone or glass.

Limits

  • Water is the universal counter — wet sand stops flowing.
  • Ambient users are helpless where there is no sand, which is why the better ones carry their own.
  • Fine control over a large volume is slow.
  • Somatic users are still bound by whatever holds the grains together.

Counters

  • Water, oil, and anything that binds grains.
  • Vitrification — heat sand and it stops being sand.
  • Sealed or airborne environments.

Questions

Why does Gaara carry sand with him?

Because ambient sand control fails the moment the environment does not supply any. Carrying a gourd of it converts a location-dependent power into one that works anywhere — the fix for the single biggest weakness in elemental manipulation.
