Netflix Cancels Another Fan-Favorite Show After Just One Season, and Fans Are Not Happy

It seems like every other week we’re hearing about another Netflix show getting the axe. But this time, it feels different. Netflix has just canceled a slate of shows after just one season, including the much-hyped Shondaland production The Residence and the fan-favorite crime drama The Waterfront. And let’s just say, fans are not happy.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially when these shows were pulling in some serious viewership numbers. So, what gives? Why is Netflix canceling shows that seem to be doing so well? Let’s break it down.

The Waterfront: Dead in the Water

First up, we have The Waterfront, the crime drama from Scream and Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson. This show had all the makings of a hit: a stellar cast including Holt McCallany and Melissa Benoist, a juicy family drama plot, and a prime spot on Netflix. And for a while, it was a hit! The show spent five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 and even hit the #1 spot for three of those weeks. [1]

So, with all that success, why the cancellation? It’s the question on everyone’s mind. While Netflix hasn’t given an official reason, the decision has left fans and even the show’s creator scratching their heads. Williamson himself took to social media to express his disappointment, saying, “While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1.” [2]

Pulse: Flatlined

Next on the chopping block is Pulse, Netflix’s first original medical procedural drama. This show had a lot of buzz, and it delivered, spending four weeks in the global Top 10 and racking up over 20 million views. [3] But it seems that even that wasn’t enough to save it. The show was officially canceled in July 2025, after just one season.

One theory is that Pulse was a victim of bad timing. The show premiered around the same time as HBO Max’s own medical drama, The Pitt, which may have split the audience. It’s a tough break for a show that had a lot of potential and a dedicated fanbase.

The Residence: Evicted

Perhaps the most shocking cancellation of all is The Residence. This was a Shondaland production, people! From the mind of Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton. A murder mystery set in the White House, starring the incredible Uzo Aduba. What could go wrong?

Apparently, a lot. Despite a strong start and four weeks in the global Top 10, The Residence was also given the boot. Reports suggest that the show’s high production costs, including a massive recreation of the White House, may have been a factor. [4] It’s a tough reminder that in the world of streaming, even a show with a powerhouse producer and a killer premise isn’t safe.

What Does This Mean for Netflix?

So, what’s the deal with all these cancellations? It’s a question that’s been on the minds of Netflix subscribers for a while now. The streamer has a reputation for being quick to cancel shows, even those with a passionate fanbase. And this latest round of cancellations is only adding fuel to the fire.

It seems that Netflix is more focused on bringing in new subscribers than keeping existing ones happy. The company’s strategy appears to be to throw a bunch of shows at the wall and see what sticks. And if a show doesn’t become a massive, worldwide phenomenon, it’s not worth the investment.

But is this a sustainable model? Only time will tell. For now, it’s a frustrating time to be a Netflix subscriber. You never know if your new favorite show will be around for another season. And that’s a tough pill to swallow.
