Sound Manipulation

Also called Sonokinesis, Sonic Scream, Vibration Control

Sound manipulation is control of vibration and pressure waves. It is unusually lethal on paper — sound at sufficient amplitude destroys structures and liquefies tissue — and is nearly always given a hard limitation to compensate, most famously a voice that cannot be used at all.

How it works

Emission users generate sound. The ceiling is amplitude, and the counter is trivially simple: block the ears.

Manipulation users shape sound that already exists, including silencing it, which makes them far harder to counter.

Resonance is the top tier — matching a structure's natural frequency to shatter it, which requires precision rather than volume.

Sound powers are almost always paired with a severe cost. Black Bolt cannot speak; a whisper levels a city. That is a design choice, not an accident: an unrestricted sonic power ends most fights immediately.

How it scales

  1. Emission

Produces damaging sound. Capped by amplitude.

  2. Manipulation

    Shapes and silences existing sound.

  3. Resonance

    Destroys by matching natural frequency.

  4. Concussive

    Weaponised pressure rather than noise.

Who has sound manipulation

Across 3 universes. This list crosses publishers — something no single wiki can do, because every franchise keeps its own separate database.

The feat ledger

Every entry cites the work it comes from. Feat means it was shown in the work; Statement means a character or narrator said it. Nothing here is a fan estimate unless it is tagged Calc.

Statement Fantastic Four Volume 1 · Earth-616

Banshee — Uses lower-frequency sonics for flight and higher ones as a weapon, from one ability

Black Canary — The Canary Cry is a metahuman ability paired with hand-to-hand skill written as among the best in the setting

Feat The Brave and the Bold · Post-Crisis DCshown, no figure stated

Kyoka Jiro — Plugs her earphone jacks into a surface to transmit her amplified heartbeat through it, using her body as amplifier and sensor

Feat Fantastic Four Volume 1 (1966) · Earth-616shown, no figure stated

Black Bolt — A whisper levels a city block, which is why he does not speak

Black Bolt — The quasi-sonic scream is his only offensive technique and is never used casually

Feat Fantastic Four Volume 1 · Earth-616shown, no figure stated

Black Bolt — Speaking is written as the ultimate sanction — a plot event rather than an attack

Statement Fantastic Four Volume 1 · Earth-616figure stated in the work

Dazzler — Absorbs ambient sound as the fuel for every other ability

Statement Dazzler (1981) · Earth-616figure stated in the work

Dazzler — In silence she has nothing to convert, the stated limit on her

Statement Dazzler · Earth-616figure stated in the work

Feat Action Comics · Post-Crisis DCshown, no figure stated

Silver Banshee — The true-name condition is a magical constraint on an otherwise sonic power

Statement Action Comics · Post-Crisis DCfigure stated in the work

Kyoka Jiro — Earphone Jack plugs into surfaces to amplify her heartbeat as an attack

Feat My Hero Academia · Manga canonshown, no figure stated

Kyoka Jiro — Her output depends on what she can plug into, which is the stated limit

Limits

  • Sound needs a medium — vacuum defeats it entirely.
  • Ear protection is a cheap and effective counter to emission users.
  • Emission users usually damage themselves at full output.
  • Black Bolt's power is inseparable from his silence, which is the point.

Counters

  • Vacuum, or any environment without a medium.
  • Soundproofing and ear protection.
  • Preventing the user from speaking or breathing.

Questions

Why can Black Bolt never speak?

His voice is the power. Even a whisper releases enough force to level structures, so silence is not discipline but containment — the limitation and the ability are the same thing.
