energy power
Energy Projection
Also called Energy Blasts, Concussive Blasts, Force Projection
Energy projection is the release of directed energy as an attack. The distinction that decides matchups is what the energy actually does — concussive force, heat, radiation or disintegration — because a character resistant to one is frequently defenceless against another.
How it works
"Energy blast" is a category, not a power, and treating it as one is why comparisons fail.
Concussive energy is pure kinetic force. Cyclops's optic blasts produce no heat at all, which is a deliberate and frequently forgotten detail — he pushes, he does not burn.
Thermal energy burns. Radiant energy irradiates and can bypass physical durability entirely. Cosmic energy, the Power Cosmic being the archetype, operates on matter and energy at a fundamental level and is closer to reality alteration than to a weapon.
The second axis is source. Internally generated energy is limited by the user's reserves and usually has a recovery cost. Externally powered energy — Starfire converting ultraviolet radiation, Superman's stored sunlight — is limited by supply, which can be cut off. Equipment-based energy is limited by the equipment.
Cyclops is the standard case study for control rather than output: his blasts are always on, and his real limitation is that he cannot switch the power off.
How it scales
- Bolt
Discrete blasts. Standard ranged offence.
- Beam
Sustained output, with a corresponding drain.
- Field
Energy shaped defensively into barriers and constructs.
- Cosmic
Manipulates matter and energy at a fundamental level.

Limits
- Internally generated energy depletes and needs recovery.
- Externally powered users can be starved of their source.
- Energy type determines effectiveness — concussive force does nothing to an intangible opponent.
- Cyclops cannot turn his own power off, which is a limitation and a characterisation rather than a strength.
Counters
- Energy absorption and reflection.
- Cutting off the source: darkness for solar-powered users, power-dampening fields.
- Intangibility and dispersal.
Questions
Are Cyclops's optic blasts hot?
No. Cyclops's blasts are purely concussive force with no thermal component — they punch rather than burn. It is one of the most consistently misremembered details in comics, and it matters because it means heat resistance offers no protection against him.
