Electrokinesis

Also called Electricity Manipulation, Lightning Control, Electrokinesis

Electrokinesis is the generation and control of electrical current. It divides into characters who produce charge biologically and characters who call down lightning as a weather effect — Storm's lightning is atmospheric manipulation, not electrical generation, which is why the two scale completely differently.

How it works

Electricity is the fastest-acting elemental power in fiction and the one with the most consistent hard counter: insulation and grounding.

Biological generators — Black Lightning, Denki Kaminari, Laxus — produce current from their own body. Their limit is wattage, and the better-written ones have an explicit one. Denki short-circuits his own brain past his cap.

Atmospheric callers — Storm, Thor — do not generate current at all. Storm manipulates weather systems and lightning falls out of that. Thor's lightning is divine and innate, not a property of Mjolnir, which is the most persistent misconception about the character.

Conductive transformers — Laxus, Killua's Godspeed — convert their own body into current or run it through their nervous system. This buys extraordinary reaction speed at a physical cost, and it is the version most likely to be mislabelled as super speed.

How it scales

  1. Discharge

Emits current at a target. Capped by the user's wattage.

  2. Aura

Maintains a constant electrical field, usable defensively. Black Lightning's force field.

  3. Body conversion

Becomes electricity, gaining travel speed and physical intangibility to blunt attacks.

  4. Atmospheric

Produces lightning as a consequence of weather control. Scale is set by the storm, not by the body.

The feat ledger

Every entry cites the work it comes from. Feat means it was shown in the work; Statement means a character or narrator said it. Nothing here is a fan estimate unless it is tagged Calc.

Limits

  • Insulation and grounding are near-total counters against most users.
  • Biological generators have a stated wattage ceiling in every well-written system.
  • Electricity needs a conductive path — vacuum and dry non-conductors blunt it.
  • Body-conversion users often take real damage from their own current, as Killua does with Godspeed.

Counters

  • Rubber, ceramic and other insulators.
  • Grounding the user or the environment.
  • Opponents who absorb electricity as an energy source.

Questions

Does Thor need Mjolnir to make lightning?

No. Thor's control of lightning is innate and divine. Mjolnir focuses and directs it, which is why the hammer appears in almost every depiction, but Thor has repeatedly summoned lightning without it across both the comics and the MCU.

Is Storm an electrokinetic?

Not strictly. Storm manipulates weather — pressure, humidity, wind and temperature — and lightning is a downstream product of that. It matters for comparison, because her lightning scales with the atmosphere available rather than with her own body.
