Saints Row just got announced at Games.com and is set to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC on February 25, 2022.
The Saints Row series is famous for its wacky action and over-the-top gameplay, and open-world shenanigans. There are insane weapons, superpowers, funny gags, and even joke weapons in the games. Believe it or not, it didn’t start out that way. The first Saints Row felt like a GTA clone with some added flavors to differentiate it from the competition. It was Saints Row 3 that fully embraced the wacky nature of the series and ran with it.
The series also threw shade at other franchises, including video games and movies. The 4th game in the series had many parallels with The Matrix; this was the game where the Saints became superheroes, and you’d be able to leap across buildings and glide like a squirrel on the map. We also had super speed and super strength. I always say the 4th Saints Row game is one of the best superhero games ever made.
So naturally, I was waiting for the trailer to drop after Geoff Keighley teased it last week. And lo and behold, Deepsilver and Volition delivered on their promise.
Saints Row Reboot – Fan Reaction
I’m not going to lie; I was a little disappointed that none of the old saints, meaning the original gang featured in all previous games, were present in the reboot. There was no boss, no Genki, and there was no Gat. None of the familiar faces were there; however, it is entirely understandable as it is a reboot and the developers completely changed everything.
Before I get everyone too disappointed, remember, it was just a CGI trailer and showed none of the gameplay during the launch. Bringing me to the reviews. I do think fans were a little harsh on the social media platforms. The overwhelmingly adverse reactions were unnecessarily jumping the gun because, apart from a few sizzle reels shown in a developer interview, we haven’t seen any gameplay.
At the moment, the official trailer on the Saints Row channel has 21,000 likes and 42,000 dislikes. One of the top comments on the YouTube video says, “I feel dull because this doesn’t look like Saints Row, it looks like fortnight made a GTA game.”
One Twitter user whined, “like I wasted my time defending you guys,” and the official Saints Row Twitter account replied:
“We are not backing down on this game. We get it, it’s new, and it’s a shock reaction to a reboot like no other.”
The official Saints Row Twitter account has been replying to people since the announcement. Some comments are funny, some are informative, and some are downright sassy, which is entirely on par with how an actual Saint from the Row would reply. So I’ll be holding my judgment until I experience the game in action in an extended chunk of unedited gameplay. I suggest true fans do the same.
The Saints Row trailer revealed the reboot that takes place in the American Southwest-inspired city Santo Ileso. An areal view shows cacti and dirt roads lining the desert roads, only to arrive at a destination reminiscent of the old Las Vegas Strip. The story involves you playing a fully customizable character alongside 3 other supporting characters who are all new to the series.
Take a look at the trailer yourself and see how well Volition has animated the action. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait a long time actually to play the game yourselves. The game releases next year on February 25, 2022.
