Umbrakinesis

Also called Shadow Manipulation, Darkness Control, Nyctokinesis

Umbrakinesis is control over shadow and darkness. Settings split sharply on what that means: shadow as an absence of light, which is a stealth and denial power, or shadow as a substance from another place, which makes it a source of constructs, transport and armies.

How it works

Absence users suppress light. The power is concealment and blindness — real, but bounded.

Substantial users treat shadow as material and build with it: weapons, walls, tendrils.

Dimensional users treat shadow as a doorway. The Darkforce and similar concepts are less a shadow than an adjacent place, which is why Cloak functions as transport and as a prison rather than as a light switch.

Command is the tier that changes the scale entirely — shadows as independent soldiers. Sung Jinwoo's shadow army is the clearest modern example, and it converts a personal ability into an army.

Bright, omnidirectional light is the standard counter, and the good systems note that it removes the medium rather than merely hurting the user.

How it scales

  1. Absence

    Suppresses light. Concealment and blindness.

  2. Substantial

    Shadow as material for constructs.

  3. Dimensional

Shadow as a doorway to somewhere else.

  4. Command

    Shadows as independent, obedient soldiers.

Limits

  • Strong omnidirectional light removes the medium entirely.
  • Most users need an existing shadow to work from.
  • Dimensional users risk what is on the other side.
  • Commanded shadows are usually bound to a range or a count.

Counters

  • Flooding an area with light from several directions.
  • Fighting in open daylight.
  • Severing the link between commander and shadow.

Questions

Is darkness a real power or just the absence of light?

It depends on the setting, and the difference is enormous. Suppressing light is a stealth power. Treating shadow as substance or as a doorway to another dimension — the Darkforce, a shadow army — makes it a source of constructs, transport and manpower.
