The Gears of War: E-Day launch trailer dropped from Xbox on October 1, 2026, timed to the game’s early access start and built around Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” It’s a campaign-and-multiplayer highlight reel ahead of the full release, which arrives 5 days later on October 6, 2026, and it looks very different from the story-driven trailer Xbox showed off back in August.

Bravo Squad Gets Its Moment

The trailer opens on Bravo Squad — the four soldiers the campaign actually follows — moving through wrecked streets while Emergence Day is still tearing the city apart around them. It’s the first launch trailer to put real gameplay footage of the whole squad front and center, instead of leaning on cinematic key art the way earlier reveals did.

The Coalition has been clear that this isn’t a two-hander. Marcus and Dom sit up front as the veterans; Mags Carter, a former Gear working Kalona’s Imulsion refinery, and Lucas Reyes, a cadet who’s never seen real combat, round out the back half of the squad. The trailer doesn’t spell out which of the four is narrating or leading any individual beat. Which of the four is on screen in any given shot isn’t always clear — the trailer cuts between them too fast to pin a name to every face.

The Locust Are Still Finding New Ways to Be Horrifying

A new Locust creature gets a long, deliberate close-up midway through the trailer — a red-and-black, many-legged thing with pincers that doesn’t match anything from the original trilogy’s bestiary. It’s framed almost like a horror-movie reveal, holding on the creature’s legs and mouth before cutting away.

Later, the squad runs into something much bigger: a creature built almost entirely out of long, spindly legs, towering over all four soldiers against an open sky. E-Day is pitching itself as an origin story for the war, and the trailer backs that up by showing threats that look genuinely new rather than just reskinning the Boomers and Wretches longtime fans already know.

Four Players, One Doomed City

A hard cut to a “4-PLAYER ONLINE CO-OP” title card confirms what The Coalition has already said elsewhere: the campaign supports single-player, 2-player split-screen, or full 4-player online co-op. The footage right after the card shows what looks like all four squad members on screen at once, trading fire with Locust forces in the rubble.

The Multiplayer Side Gets Its Own Spotlight

A second title card shifts the trailer away from the campaign entirely to call out multiplayer modes and maps. The Coalition has confirmed two modes at launch: Horde Siege, a 4-player PvE wave-survival mode built around class roles (Assault, Marksman, Medic, Breacher), and a 4v4 Versus PvP mode. The trailer’s own footage here is quick-cut combat in a ruined cityscape — recognizably Gears, but not tied to any specific map or mode by name.

The Trailer Ends on a Different Note

Instead of closing on one last explosion, the trailer settles on a still piece of key art: two Bravo Squad soldiers standing back to back against a sky cracked with red lightning, with the game’s logo burning in over the top. After 80-odd seconds of fast cuts, ending on a static image is a deliberate choice — it’s the one shot clearly meant to work as a poster, not a gameplay clip.

What’s New Here

This is a genuinely different trailer from the one Xbox showed at Gamescom in August, not just a repackaged cut of the same footage. That trailer was a cinematic, story-first reveal; this one is built to sell the game you can actually play starting October 1.

Gamescom Reveal Trailer (August 2026) Launch Trailer (October 1, 2026)
Focus Narrative and tone Campaign and multiplayer gameplay
Runtime Just over 2 minutes About 85 seconds
Music Orchestral, string-led score Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls”
What it shows Emergence Day’s opening chaos, Marcus and Dom alone All four Bravo Squad members, co-op and PvP modes
How the launch trailer differs from the Gamescom 2026 story reveal.

The practical upshot: if you only saw the Gamescom trailer, this is the first time you’re seeing Mags Carter, Lucas Reyes, 4-player co-op footage, or anything about the multiplayer modes at all.

What the Trailer Doesn’t Show

No General RAAM, no named Locust leader of any kind — every creature on screen is unnamed. There’s no footage of a specific multiplayer map, no map count, and no mention of a post-launch content roadmap or season structure. And despite confirming all four playable characters appear in the campaign, the trailer gives no hint of how Mags’ or Lucas’ personal arcs end up — reasonable, since this is still meant to sell you on playing it yourself.

Is It Actually Good?

Early reviews, published the same day the early access period and this trailer both went live, put Gears of War: E-Day at 88 on Metacritic for Xbox Series X and 84 on PC — ahead of both Gears 4 and Gears 5, which scored 84 apiece. For a franchise reboot built as an origin story, that’s a strong signal the gameplay backs up the trailer.
