It was a pleasant surprise to see rumors turn into reality when Marvel’s Midnight Suns got announced. The game was long rumored to be in production, and to finally see the trailer was a divine experience. Firaxis, the developer of the legendary XCOM series, is behind this turn-based role-playing game.
Jake Solomon is the designer of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, as well as XCOM 2. It is he who is leading the development of Marvel’s Midnight Suns. If you are a huge fan of the gameplay mechanics of XCOM games, then you’d be disappointed to know that Marvel’s Midnight Suns does not share any gameplay mechanics with it; subsequently, the game won’t feature a permanent death mode.
Who Are the Midnight Suns?
Marvel’s Midnight Suns, is based on The Rise of the Midnight Sons comic book arc, started in 1992 with Ghost Rider comics. It features a team of antiheroes like Morbius, Dr. Strange, Jonny Blaze, Blade and many more. They team up to stop Lilith, who is the mother of demons. To be honest, I haven’t read the whole arc, but I’ve heard great things about it from my friends. So this might be a good time to read up on the comics before the release.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns, What Is It?
It is a turn-based, team-focused, role-playing game set in the Marvel universe. In the game, you’ll take control of The Hunter, which is a new character designed in collaboration with Marvel Comics. Of course, in the usual role-playing fashion, you’ll be able to fully customize your player in ways that include appearance as well as combat abilities. The developer explained that there are over 40 different superpowers that the players can choose for their character, ranging from light to dark.
You’d be able to take 3 other superheroes on missions with you, and all of you will improve over time. It is a role-playing game, so there will be leveling up and unlocking new skills. Players will also explore The Abbey, which is the new headquarters for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. You’d also be able to develop relationships with other superheroes while exploring the home base.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns Characters?
The biggest draw of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, as a Marvel fan, is the roster of superheroes displayed in the trailer. Some potential team-ups that made appearances in the tease are never seen before, especially in video games. Firaxis confirmed that there would be 13 heroes in all, including Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Blade, Magik, Nico Minoru, Robbie Reyes, Wolverine, and Dr. Strange. They are taken from the Avengers, the X-Men, the Runaways and beyond.13 is a big number.
Giving you a diverse platter of heroes you can choose from to be on your team and level up, so I can certainly see a lot of replayability in this game. The developer has confirmed that you can interact with your superhero companions.
Marvel is on a roll with superhero video games. Some of them are highly praised, like the Sony PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man Miles Morales, while Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers struggled a bit. Marvel’s Future Revolution on mobile devices is getting fairly good reviews. As a fan, I am excited to see more collaborations Marvel, and hopefully we’ll see a dedicated X-Men based game in the near future.
The game is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Game Store, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in March 2022.
The gameplay reveal is set to be on September 1, 2021, so we don’t have to wait too long to see the game in action. We’ll be updating you with more information as it releases.
