Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream Xbox games to a phone, PC, TV or headset without downloading them. In the US it comes with Game Pass Essential ($9.99 a month), Premium ($14.99) or Ultimate ($22.99). Starting in November 2026, those plans include 5, 10 and 15 hours of cloud play a month, with extra hours sold separately.

How Does Xbox Cloud Gaming Work?
The game runs on Microsoft’s servers and streams to your screen like a video, while your button presses travel back the other way. Nothing installs on your device, so a cheap phone or an old Xbox One can play games built for Xbox Series X|S. Your saves and progress sync to your Xbox account, so you can start on the couch and pick it up on your phone.
You play at xbox.com/play in a browser, or through the Xbox app on consoles, PCs, TVs and headsets. Free-to-play games like Fortnite only need a free Microsoft account. Everything else needs Game Pass, or, from November, your own copy of the game plus purchased cloud hours.
How Much Does Xbox Cloud Gaming Cost?
Cloud gaming isn’t sold on its own; it’s part of every console Game Pass plan. Here’s what each US plan costs and what it gets you once the hour limits kick in.
| Plan | US price | Cloud play from Nov. 2026 | Games library |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $9.99/mo | 5 hours a month | 50+ games |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99/mo | 10 hours a month | 200+ games, Xbox-published games within a year of launch |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99/mo | 15 hours a month | 500+ games, new games on day one, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99/mo | Not included | PC library only |
| No subscription | No monthly fee | Buy hours from Nov. (price not announced) | Eligible games you own, plus free-to-play games |
Ultimate used to cost $29.99. Xbox cut it to $22.99 in April 2026, and in exchange new Call of Duty games stopped arriving on Game Pass on day one; they now join about a year later.
What Changes in November 2026?
Unlimited cloud play ends. In a September 3 Xbox Wire post, Microsoft said Game Pass plans will include a set number of hours each month starting in November: 15 on Ultimate, 10 on Premium and 5 on Essential. Xbox expects the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers, the ones who stream the most.
When you run out, you can buy more time in the Xbox Store. Xbox hasn’t announced what extra hours cost; it says pricing, eligible games and a way to check your remaining time will come in November. The Verge reports the hours will be sold in bundles that roll over if you don’t use them. Hours from two different Game Pass subscriptions don’t stack; you get whichever plan has more.
Xbox’s reason is simple: “the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer,” it said, adding that “for some players the practical result is a higher cost.”
Is 15 Hours a Month Enough?
For most people, yes. For some, not even close. Fifteen hours is about three and a half hours a week. Essential’s five hours works out to roughly ten minutes a day, which is enough to try a game before you download it and not much else.
The players who get squeezed are the ones who use the cloud as their console. If you’re on an Xbox One and stream Series X|S-only games, or you play mostly on a phone or Fire TV with no console at all, you’ll burn 15 hours in two weekends. Check how much you actually stream in a typical month. If it’s under three hours a week, nothing changes for you. If it’s more, budget for extra hours, or treat this as the moment to pick up a Series S and download instead.

What Devices Can You Use?
Xbox Cloud Gaming runs on most screens you already own. According to Xbox’s cloud gaming page, supported devices include:
- Consoles: Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
- PCs: Windows PCs through the Xbox app or a browser
- Phones and tablets: iPhone, iPad and Android, through the app or xbox.com/play
- Smart TVs: select LG, Samsung and VIDAA-powered TVs, plus Amazon Fire TV
- VR headsets: select Meta Quest headsets, on a big virtual screen
- Handhelds: Windows handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally
- Browsers: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari
What Do You Need to Play?
You need four things: a plan (or an owned game and cloud hours), a supported device, a controller, and a fast connection. Xbox lists a minimum of 10 Mbps, with 20 Mbps recommended on consoles, PCs and tablets, and suggests 5GHz Wi-Fi.
| Requirement | What Xbox says |
|---|---|
| Internet | 10 Mbps minimum; 20 Mbps for the best quality on consoles, PCs and tablets |
| Wi-Fi | 5GHz recommended |
| Controller | Xbox Wireless Controller, Sony DualShock 4 and others via Bluetooth or USB |
| Touch controls | Supported on select games |
| Account | Free Microsoft account; Game Pass for the library |
Streaming has trade-offs. Xbox warns that streamed games can have limited video resolution, limited audio output, cloud saves only, and limited support for some accessories. A wired connection on a PC or console, or sitting near your router, makes the biggest difference.

What Games Can You Play?
Most of the Game Pass library streams, and that’s where the big releases show up. Xbox’s own Fable reboot launches February 23, 2027 with day-one Game Pass and cloud support, and Persona 4 Revival lands on Game Pass Ultimate on day one too. Exactly which games stream depends on your plan and changes over time; the full list lives at xbox.com/play.
You can also stream select games you own that aren’t on Game Pass, including most Xbox Play Anywhere titles. Ubisoft+ Premium members can stream supported games from that catalog without buying them. Free-to-play games like Fortnite stream with just a Microsoft account.
Can You Use Xbox Cloud Gaming Without Game Pass?
Yes, in two ways. Free-to-play games already work with a free Microsoft account. And starting in November 2026, Xbox says you’ll be able to buy cloud playtime in the Xbox Store and stream eligible games you own, no subscription needed. If you only stream now and then, that could end up cheaper than a monthly plan, but Xbox hasn’t priced it yet.
