Our Take

Devils’ Crest is the closest Kawahara has come to horror. Where Sword Art Online dared you to love its game, this one wants the VR headset to feel like a trap, and the opening two episodes commit to that: a routine school playtest curdles into a body count before the credits roll.

It leans hard on flashbacks to get there, which slows the back half of episode 2 down more than it needed to, but the premise — kids who can’t log out, using game magic that now has real stakes — is strong enough to carry a rocky start. Anime News Network’s episode 1-2 review called it a ‘B-‘ opener: solid worldbuilding and fluid action, dragged down by reused animation and over-explained flashbacks.

Sword Art Online fans will recognize the DNA — Kawahara wrote both — but the tone here is closer to a survival thriller than a power fantasy, with the cast still figuring out the rules of a game that no longer has an exit. ANN’s original announcement has the full staff list and premiere details. Episode 3 arrives just 7 days after the November 6, 2026 premiere, continuing the show’s weekly Friday pace.
