Steel Ball Run Episode 6 Review: Gyro’s Backstory Finally Explains Why He’s Running

Spoiler warning: this review covers Steel Ball Run episode 6, “Gyro Zeppeli’s Destiny,” which streamed on Netflix October 23, 2026, in full, including its ending. Manga readers: some of what’s discussed below (Gyro’s backstory, the Marco pardon) comes from Hirohiko Araki’s original Steel Ball Run manga and the anime adapts it closely, so treat this as both an episode spoiler and a source-material spoiler.

We haven’t watched this one firsthand — this desk doesn’t have a video pipeline for weekly anime episodes yet, so the plot facts below are cross-checked across But Why Tho, Bubbleblabber, Anime Superhero News and Fandomwire rather than trusted from a single recap.

Episode 6 streamed October 23, 2026, the sixth of 12 episodes in Netflix’s weekly Friday run, which spans 70 days from its September 25, 2026 start to the December 4, 2026 finale.

What Actually Happens in Episode 6

“Gyro Zeppeli’s Destiny” steps away from the present-day race for most of its runtime. A flashback takes us to Naples, where nine-year-old Gyro is raised by his father Gregorio Zeppeli to inherit the family’s centuries-old role: royal executioner for the Kingdom of Naples, using the Spin not to heal but to numb a condemned prisoner’s pain before death. Gregorio’s advice to his son — that every man needs a map in his heart to cross the wilderness of life — becomes the episode’s thesis statement.

Gyro’s first assignment as executioner is a boy named Marco, sentenced to death for nothing more than being connected to a lord convicted of treason. The execution breaks something in Gyro, and a royal court contact tells him the only way to win Marco a pardon is to win the Steel Ball Run itself and the prestige that comes with it. Back in the present, a brief fight against a Netflix-original take on Fritz von Stroheim interrupts the flashback before Gyro beats him using the Spin and the episode cuts back to Johnny, whose arm begins splitting apart as the next cliffhanger.

Why the Backstory Actually Lands

Five episodes in, Gyro has mostly been the race’s most charismatic mystery — competent, unreadable, and visibly withholding something from Johnny. Episode 6 cashes that mystery in, and the answer is better than the show had any obligation to make it. Gyro isn’t chasing $50 million. He’s chasing a pardon for a nine-year-old he was forced to kill, which recontextualizes every moment of distance he’s kept from Johnny so far: this was never really Gyro’s race to win for himself.

It also finally justifies the Spin as something more than a cool power. The same technique Gregorio teaches Gyro as a tool of mercy — numbing pain before an execution — is the exact technique Gyro now uses to fight. The show has spent six episodes building a power system; this is the first time it’s bothered to explain what that power is supposed to mean to the person using it.

The Von Stroheim Fight Is Just a Palate Cleanser

The present-day interruption — Gyro making quick work of a Steel Ball Run take on Fritz von Stroheim — is the episode’s weakest stretch, and it knows it. It exists to give the flashback a breather, not to raise the stakes, and multiple reviewers flagged it as rushed: Bubbleblabber’s David King called the confrontation “a little rushed” next to how much time the episode spends on Gyro’s past. That’s a fair complaint, but it’s also clearly the point — this episode was never about the race.

The One Adaptation Wrinkle Manga Readers Will Notice

This is where the anime quietly complicates its own story. Episode 6 states that Gyro learned about the Steel Ball Run roughly two months before it started in September 1890 — but earlier episodes, matching Araki’s manga, already established Gyro arriving in America back in May. The anime hasn’t walked that back on screen; it’s just introduced a new line that doesn’t line up with its own timeline. It’s a small continuity wrinkle rather than a story-breaking one, but it’s exactly the kind of adaptation slip that’s easy to miss if you haven’t read the source material and are only watching the dates on screen.

The placement of the flashback itself is also a deliberate change. In the manga, Gyro’s backstory arrives as an interlude between two unrelated present-day fights; the anime moves it to sit right before the Von Stroheim cameo instead, which is the more conventional choice but loses some of the manga’s stranger pacing.

Outlet Score Verdict
Bubbleblabber (English dub) 9/10 “An enjoyable episode that gives Gyro’s participation in the race a more meaningful purpose.”
But Why Tho 8.5/10 “Will satisfy the fans who’ve been waiting for more exploration into Gyro’s backstory.”

No single outlet’s star rating is this site’s own score — Comic Book Co doesn’t assign a numeric rating to anime episode reviews, since there’s no consistent scale across the outlets covering a weekly Netflix release. The two scores above are each reviewer’s own, cited as published: see Bubbleblabber’s dub review and But Why Tho’s review in full.

Where Steel Ball Run Goes From Here

Johnny’s arm splitting apart at the end of episode 6 is the first real sign that his own Stand, introduced only two episodes ago, comes with a cost the show hasn’t explained yet. With Gyro’s motivation now fully on the table, episode 7 — out October 30 — has room to swing the focus back to Johnny without the show feeling like it’s stalling.

Mostly, yes. Most of “Gyro Zeppeli’s Destiny” is a flashback to Gyro’s childhood in Naples, with only a short present-day race scene bookending it.

Why does Gyro want to win the Steel Ball Run?

To win a royal pardon for a boy named Marco, who Gyro was ordered to execute as a child despite Marco committing no real crime. Winning the race is the only way to clear him.

Is Gyro Zeppeli related to any other JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure character?

Gyro is a Zeppeli, the same family as Will A. Zeppeli from Phantom Blood and Caesar Zeppeli from Battle Tendency, though Steel Ball Run restarts the Joestar/Zeppeli families in an alternate timeline rather than directly continuing their story.

When does Steel Ball Run episode 7 come out?

October 30, 2026, on Netflix, continuing the weekly Friday schedule.

Do I need to read the Steel Ball Run manga to understand episode 6?

No. The episode’s backstory is self-contained, though manga readers will notice the anime slightly rearranges where this flashback happens compared to the source material.
