The trilogy’s actual ending, not a victory lap

Vol. 3 is not a film to start the series on. It spends its 150 minutes finishing an argument the first two films spent six years building: what Rocket is, where he came from, and what the Guardians actually owe each other. James Gunn wrote and directed all three films himself, which is rare for the MCU and is exactly why the ending holds together as one story instead of a franchise running out a contract.

The structure splits in two: a present-day mission to save Rocket’s life after Adam Warlock’s attack on Knowhere, cut against flashbacks to the High Evolutionary’s experiments that made Rocket who he is. The flashbacks are the harder watch by a wide margin, and they are the reason this film carries an R-adjacent reputation despite its PG-13 rating. It is also, deliberately, an ending: Gunn has said this is the last film with this specific lineup, and the last act plays like one, giving most of the cast an actual send-off rather than a sequel hook.

If you are coming in having only seen the Avengers films, the two earlier Guardians films are not optional homework here the way some MCU side-sequels let you skip ahead. Rocket’s backstory, Gamora’s altered memory after Endgame, and Star-Lord’s grief are all paid off from setup the first two films did the work for. Our earlier look at whether this is a bittersweet farewell goes deeper on how the ending lands, and our watch guides track everything else we cover by release date.
