Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Guide: Runtime, Cast and Where to Stream

A prequel published first and animated second, which settles the argument

“It’s a prequel, so watch it first” is the single most common piece of bad Jujutsu Kaisen advice, and the release history explains why. Gege Akutami serialized these four chapters before the main manga, under a different title, as a trial run for the world. So chronologically the advice is defensible. But the film was made after season 1 had already aired, by the same studio, for an audience that had just spent 24 episodes learning what a cursed spirit is, what a cursed technique is and why Satoru Gojo’s presence in a scene changes it. Watch it cold and you get a competent horror-tinged school film with a lot of unexplained vocabulary. Watch it after season 1 and the prequel structure does what a prequel is supposed to do. The other reason people miss it is mechanical. On Crunchyroll, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is not an entry inside the Jujutsu Kaisen series page – it is its own listing, with its own artwork and its own rating, which is why a viewer who finishes season 1 and clicks “next” never encounters it. The same is true of the compilation films. There is no in-app signpost; you have to go looking. Sunghoo Park directed, Hiroshi Seko wrote it, and MAPPA animated it in the gap between the first and second seasons, which is exactly the period the studio’s reputation was built on.

One date worth getting right: the film opened in Japan on December 24, 2021 and did not reach US and Canadian theaters until March 18, 2022 – the release record carries both, and most listings carry only the first. At 105 minutes it is the shortest way into the franchise’s back catalogue, and its lead is not a one-off: he returns in the series proper, which is the real argument for not skipping it.
