The reveal came as a short video. It showed three faces — Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Garp and Rocks D. Xebec — which is enough to place the film precisely in the timeline without a single line of plot synopsis. The Baad title card that followed was drawn by Eiichiro Oda himself, though what Baad refers to has not been explained.
The films were not the only thing in the broadcast. Netflix used the same event to fill out the live-action series’ Alabasta cast, with Variety reporting Emilio Sakraya as Koza, Omid Abtahi as Toto, Jamie Ward as Pell and Nabeel Khan as Chaka. That third season is officially titled One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta and has wrapped filming in Cape Town. The event also published the results of the second worldwide character poll, which Luffy won.

One note on that numbering, because the coverage split on it. Several outlets called God Valley the fifteenth One Piece movie. Both Wikipedia and the One Piece Wiki list it as the sixteenth. The lower count only works if you drop Straw Hat Chase, the 30-minute 3D short released as half of a double bill in 2011.
What the God Valley Incident actually is
God Valley was an island in the West Blue, outside World Government control, and the birthplace of both Shanks and Rocks D. Xebec. Thirty-eight years before the present-day story, the World Nobles chose it as the venue for a Native Hunting Competition — a hunt in which they and their Knights of God shot the island’s civilian population for sport. Roughly 100,000 people were tagged as quarry.
Word leaked. The Rocks Pirates sailed in, and so did the Roger Pirates, and the fight that followed put an implausible number of future legends on one island at one time: Whitebeard, Kaidou and Big Mom were all serving under Rocks D. Xebec; Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban were with Roger; Monkey D. Garp arrived with the Marines; Monkey D. Dragon was a Marine cadet; Bartholomew Kuma, Marshall D. Teach and a one-year-old Shanks were all on the island as captives or children. By the One Piece Wiki’s count, at least eleven confirmed Conqueror’s Haki users were present.
Roger and Garp — enemies in every other context — fought together to kill Rocks. Garp came out of it with the title Hero of the Marines. The Rocks Pirates disbanded, and three of the crew Rocks left behind — Whitebeard, Kaidou and Big Mom — went on to become Emperors of the Sea in their own right. The island sank and was scrubbed from every official map. Why “the first canon One Piece movie” is not quite right
Within hours of the announcement, a lot of coverage was calling God Valley the franchise’s first canon film and the end of a 27-year tradition of non-canon side stories. That framing misses two things, and both change what this film is.
The first is that Toei has adapted the manga theatrically before. Episode of Arabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates (2007) is the Arabasta arc. Episode of Chopper Plus (2008) is Drum Island. Neither invented a story; both retold one. So a One Piece film drawn from the manga is not new.
The second is the part that is genuinely new, and it is a question of timing rather than canon. Those two films retold arcs the television anime had already broadcast years earlier — they were victory laps. God Valley is different: the flashback runs through chapters 1159 to 1166 of the manga, inside the ongoing Elbaph arc, and the TV anime has not reached it. The anime began Elbaph at episode 1156 in April 2026, adapting from chapter 1126; the God Valley flashback sits thirty-three chapters further into the arc. Episode 1175 aired the same day the films were announced, and it is still in the Knights of God invasion, well short of that flashback. So this is the actual first — a theatrical adaptation aimed at manga material the weekly series has yet to animate.
It also means God Valley is not a reveal. Readers already know how this ends, because Oda published it. Anyone treating the film as the moment the mystery gets solved is describing the state of the story in 2024, not in 2026.
Why the dates are 2027 and 2029
The two release years are not arbitrary, and the reason is the cleanest thing about the whole announcement. One Piece began serialisation in Weekly Shonen Jump on 22 July 1997, which puts the manga’s thirtieth anniversary in the summer of 2027. The anime premiered on Fuji TV on 20 October 1999, putting its thirtieth in 2029. One film for each.
Read the announcement that way and the second title looks less like a production than a date being reserved. Baad has no subject, no staff and three years of runway. God Valley, by contrast, arrived with a subject specific enough to identify the exact chapters it comes from.
There is a commercial reason to plan around those dates. One Piece Film: Red took ¥20.33 billion in Japan in 2022 — the fourth-highest gross of any Japanese film at the time, and still comfortably the franchise’s biggest. One Piece has been out of cinemas for four years since.

A short list, because the gap between what was announced and what is being written about it is already wide:
- No director, screenwriter, composer or voice cast for either film.
- No confirmation that God Valley adapts chapters 1159–1166 faithfully rather than telling its own version of the event. Toei said the subject, not the approach.
- No international release plan. Summer 2027 is the Japanese date.
- No stated relationship between the film and the TV anime’s schedule — which matters, because Toei capped the One Piece anime at a maximum of 26 episodes a year from 2026, split across two cours.
- Nothing at all about Baad beyond the title, the year and the fact that Oda drew the logo.
