First Stop: Wide-Open Fields

The trailer opens cold on an ESRB “Rating Pending” card, then spends about 20 seconds just exploring: green fields, a stream, a little village and floating orbs for Kirby to scoop up. That’s the whole pitch right there — Kirby in a genuinely open field, with no loading screen or level select in sight.

Wait, Is That King Dedede?

A few unnamed characters pop up in the first half. A big tan hand reaches into frame next to Kirby, its owner unseen (despite some early write-ups, it’s not a round red enemy). Kirby crosses a wooden bridge beside a blue-tinted Kirby-like figure — companion, NPC or second player, the trailer doesn’t say. And a parasol-rider zips through a cart scene too fast to identify.

Then Kirby shares a close shot with a big pink-and-blue royal figure in a fur-trimmed cape and red crown who looks a whole lot like King Dedede. He’s never named on screen, but Nintendo’s own product listing confirms Dedede is in the story.

The Sky Cracks Open

Then comes the turning point: a jagged crack tears across the blue sky, with light shining through the gap. It’s a quick shot, but it’s the moment the “World Beyond” in the title stops being a figure of speech.

A New Friend and a Floating Sword

Next up, a close-up of a new character with white hair and purple bangs, wearing a patterned cape over a burlap sack-like lower body. She isn’t named on screen. Shortly after, an ornate glowing sword floats alone in a starfield, trailing rainbow light — the clearest sign that this new companion is where Kirby’s new power comes from.

Kirby Powers Up, and the Sky Breaks Wide Open

Kirby glows gold in a new power pose. Then we get gameplay of the sword ability in action: Kirby, in a green hat and gold headband, slicing through rock formations. Moments later, that crack from earlier has grown into a full hole punched through the sky.

A Boss Goes Down, and the World Beyond Appears

Near the end, a big red creature breaks apart in mid-air — it looks like a boss going down, though we never see the fight. Then comes about six seconds of a brand-new view: sandstone cliffs rising out of green fields, and a path toward a hazy skyline unlike anything earlier. That’s the World Beyond, and the last thing before the logo.

What’s New Here

The big news: this is Kirby’s first true 3D open-world game. Every mainline Kirby game since the character’s 1992 debut has been level-based, including 2022’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which added 3D movement but kept selectable stages. This one is a single continuous field — the closest the series has come to a Breath of the Wild-style map.

And the trailer’s shape is a hook of its own: one open world that breaks through into a second, bigger one. GameSpot’s coverage of the reveal framed it as Kirby fully leaning into cosmic, reality-breaking power, and the sword floating in a starfield and the sky tearing open back that up. Nintendo’s own product page for the game confirms the story involves rescuing a girl with mysterious powers from King Dedede — which lines up with both the white-and-purple-haired companion and the Dedede look-alike from earlier.

What the Trailer Doesn’t Show

No exact release date. Multiple outlets, and Nintendo’s own listing, put the game in Spring 2027 on Switch 2, but no day or month is confirmed. There’s no sign of multiplayer or co-op, either — that blue-tinted Kirby-like figure on the bridge is the closest hint, and it goes unexplained. The new companion is never named on screen. And the whole trailer is cutscenes mixed with short gameplay clips. You never see a HUD, a menu, a health bar or an ability-select screen, so how Copy Abilities and the new sword power actually work in play is still a mystery.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Kirby and the World Beyond release?

Nintendo has confirmed Spring 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. No specific day or month has been announced yet.

Is Kirby and the World Beyond really open-world?

Yes. Nintendo and the trailer both present it as Kirby’s first continuous, explorable 3D field, instead of the level-based structure every earlier mainline Kirby game, including Kirby and the Forgotten Land, has used.

Who is the new companion character in the trailer?

She isn’t named on screen. Nintendo’s official product listing says the story involves a girl with mysterious powers whom Kirby helps rescue from King Dedede, which matches the white-and-purple-haired character shown in close-up in the trailer. Nintendo hasn’t given her a name as of this writing.

Is King Dedede in Kirby and the World Beyond?

Nintendo’s own listing names Dedede as part of the story. The trailer shows a large pink-and-blue royal figure whose design matches Dedede’s in a close shot, but never names him on screen.

What new ability does Kirby get in the trailer?

An ornate, glowing sword, first shown floating alone in a starfield. Later, Kirby wields it while wearing a green hat and gold headband, cutting through rock in gameplay footage.
