What’s Actually New: an Open-World Escape Room
The original Escape Academy launched in July 2022 as a series of self-contained, timed escape rooms, about 52 months before this sequel. Back 2 School keeps those rooms but connects them across an explorable campus hub, which developer Coin Crew Games is billing as the first open-world escape room game. Between puzzle rooms, you walk the school grounds directly, and the campus itself hides secrets and puzzles of its own rather than acting as a menu screen.
Is It Actually Good? What Reviewers Are Saying
Mixed-to-positive: Escape Academy 2 sits at 73 on Metacritic and 84 on OpenCritic, a real split between the two aggregators. The puzzle design itself is the consistent high point — critics across outlets single out the escape rooms as clever and well-built, continuing what the original Escape Academy did well.
The open-world wrapper is where the reviews diverge. The campus hub has reported performance problems — lag and freezes outside the escape rooms themselves — along with NPCs that block paths and fast travel that Insider Gaming’s review called cumbersome. If you’re mainly here for the puzzles, that’s a tolerable trade-off; if smooth open-world traversal matters to you, expect some friction at launch.

Should You Play Solo or Co-Op?
Co-op is the mode the puzzles are actually designed around — the first Escape Academy earned its best praise for how its two-player puzzles forced real communication between players who couldn’t see the same clue at the same time, and Back 2 School keeps that structure. Solo play works and lets you control both characters, but you lose the forced back-and-forth that made the format stand out in the first place. If you have a regular co-op partner, this is built for them. For another couch co-op pick with a lower buy-in, see our Dog Man: Bark in Action co-op guide.
It’s one of several day-one additions covered in our full Xbox Game Pass November 2026 list.
