No, you don’t need the books — and season 3 is where it pays off

The Rings of Power is not an adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. It’s set thousands of years earlier, during the Second Age, drawing on the dense appendices at the back of Tolkien’s trilogy rather than the trilogy itself. You don’t need to have read anything, and you don’t need to have seen Peter Jackson’s films either — this is a prequel to all of it, with its own cast and, for now, almost none of the same characters except Galadriel, Elrond and a very young Sauron.

Season 1 spends its time hiding Sauron in plain sight and season 2 spends its time watching Celebrimbor get talked into forging nine more Rings for Men under a false name, which is the slower, talkier stretch a lot of viewers bounce off. Season 3 is where that patience is supposed to pay out: the season opens with Sauron holding the One Ring and Eregion under siege, and the season’s own synopsis promises the war finally breaking into the open. The showrunners have also said the eight episodes release in three blocks rather than weekly, finishing by Thanksgiving, which is a different pace than the first two seasons used.
