A new cast, a slower pace, and one familiar face
This is not a remake of the films — it’s a from-scratch adaptation with its own cast, planned from the start to run for a decade across the whole book series. Spreading Philosopher’s Stone across eight episodes instead of one 152-minute film is the entire pitch: subplots the 2001 movie cut for time, Peeves, the full Sorting Hat song, more of Hogwarts as a school rather than a backdrop. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout take over as Harry, Hermione and Ron, with a heavyweight adult cast around them — John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Only one actor is reprising their exact film role: Warwick Davis returns as Professor Flitwick, the same part he played across all eight original movies, which HBO has leaned on as the one deliberate thread back to the Columbus-era films. Everyone else — Dean Thomas, Crabbe and Goyle, the rest of the Hogwarts staff — is new. Our full cast rundown has every confirmed role.

The season releases complete on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, rather than doling episodes out weekly — counter-programming against the usual December movie crowd, and a binge-friendly choice for a show aimed squarely at family holiday viewing. It streams exclusively on HBO Max; the production record is where a schedule or casting change would show up first. Everything else we’re tracking by air date is in our watch guides.
