The Strongest Overlord Characters, Ranked (2026)

Last updated: September 6, 2026

The strongest Overlord characters are almost all overpowered by design — every Nazarick NPC was built as a max-level Yggdrasil character, so real feats decide the ranking, not raw title. Ainz Ooal Gown ranks first, backed by his Floor Guardians, with the hidden golem Gargantua and the instant-kill Victim close behind.

Overlord is not a finished story yet, which matters for a “strongest” ranking. Author Kugane Maruyama has confirmed the light novels will run to Volume 18, and Yen Press released the English edition of Volume 16 — the most recent one on shelves — on July 18, 2023, with Volumes 17 and 18 still unpublished as of this writing. The anime side has moved faster: four 13-episode TV seasons aired between 2015 and 2022 (per Anime News Network‘s encyclopedia listing), and the Roble Holy Kingdom arc was adapted as the film Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom instead of a fifth season — it hit Japanese theaters in September 2024, streamed on Crunchyroll starting April 24, 2025, and premiered on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on May 10, 2026. No official Season 5 has been announced by Kadokawa or Madhouse as of this writing. Every ranking below reflects the story as of the Holy Kingdom arc, the furthest point currently animated.

Why “Strongest” Is a Trap in This Particular Series

Nazarick’s roster is almost entirely made of NPCs designed by real players in Yggdrasil, the fictional MMO the story’s isekai premise is built on. In-game, every one of those players hit the level cap and dumped resources into making their creation as mechanically strong as the game allowed, which is why nearly everyone on this list can casually annihilate armies. Asking “who is strong” gets you a tie across a dozen characters. Asking “what have they actually been shown doing, on-page or on-screen” is the only question that produces a real ranking, so that’s the standard used here.

That standard also breaks a very common assumption: that a character’s rank in Nazarick’s hierarchy predicts their combat power. It doesn’t. Yggdrasil capped total class levels at 100, but heteromorphic (monster) races paid for their racial levels with stat multipliers that a humanoid build never had access to, so two level-100 characters built on different chassis are not remotely comparable. The Guardian job title tracks who Ainz put in charge of a floor, not raw output — the Floor Guardian wiki’s own strength assessment names Rubedo, an Area Guardian who never held a Floor Guardian title at all, as “the most powerful NPC of Nazarick.” Victim, ranked dead last below, makes the same point from the opposite direction: a guardian with almost no combat stats can still out-threaten the entire list with a single mechanical trump card. Rank on the org chart and rank in a fight are two different lists.

The Strongest Overlord Characters, Ranked

1. Ainz Ooal Gown

The Sorcerer King, and the only entry whose power is mostly administrative rather than physical.

Ainz Ooal Gown in his true skeletal Overlord form

Ainz built his Yggdrasil character as a support-and-necromancy caster, not a melee fighter, which is exactly why his real advantage isn’t personal combat — it’s the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown, a World Item that removes the tier ceiling on his undead-affinity spells. That single piece of equipment is why he can cast Grand Cross, a super-tier spell most casters in the setting can’t legally access at all, and why he was able to physically stop a fully rampaging Shalltear Bloodfallen when none of his other Guardians could. Strip the staff and the throne away and several of his own subordinates could beat him in a straight fight; keep them, and he commands every resource in Nazarick, which is the actual reason he sits at number one.

2. Demiurge

Nazarick’s master strategist, and arguably its single most dangerous combatant.

Demiurge is an arch-devil built around absurd raw stats and an even more absurd intellect, and the story has used both. Disguised as the demon Jaldabaoth during the Holy Kingdom arc, he manipulated an entire nation into a war it couldn’t win while casually shrugging off attacks from opponents the Sacred Kingdom considered its strongest defenders. Where most Guardians win fights, Demiurge wins wars before the fighting starts, then still wins the fight.

3. Shalltear Bloodfallen

The True Vampire most fans and the wiki itself point to as the strongest Floor Guardian in a straight fight.

Shalltear is the clearest data point for just how strong a Floor Guardian can get: when a World Item hijacked her mind during the Bloody Valkyrie arc, Ainz needed his strongest gear, his strongest spell, and every advantage of preparation to bring her down, and it still wasn’t a clean win. No other Guardian’s loyal, non-brainwashed combat output has ever forced Ainz to spend that much of his own arsenal just to survive the fight.

4. Albedo

The Guardian Overseer outranks every Floor Guardian on this list, and her stats back the title up.

Albedo commands the Floor Guardians as Ainz’s second-in-command in all but formal military terms, and Ainz himself has stated that if the 9th and 10th floors were ever assigned Guardians, Sebas would take the 9th and Albedo the 10th — the deepest, most heavily defended point in the entire tomb. She’s shown far less large-scale combat on-page than Demiurge or Shalltear, which is the only reason she isn’t ranked higher; her raw combat and defensive stats are described as comparable to the very top of the Guardian roster.

5. Gargantua

A 30-meter golem the wiki names as a genuine contender for the single strongest Floor Guardian.

Gargantua barely appears in the story, and that’s the point: it’s Nazarick’s held-in-reserve answer to a threat none of the other Guardians can handle. It has no will of its own and is piloted remotely, which is why it can’t be called the “strongest” outright the way a character with agency can — but purely on stats, the Overlord wiki’s own strength breakdown puts it in the same tier as Shalltear for physical combat power, which is a sentence that applies to almost nothing else on this list.

6. Cocytus

An honor-bound Vermin Lord who commands the Sorcerer Kingdom’s entire army.

Cocytus is built as a frontline melee specialist wielding the polearm Frost Pain, and his defining feat is one of the few genuine near-losses in the series: his campaign against the Lizardman Alliance ended with him respecting his enemies enough to argue for sparing them rather than annihilating them outright. That restraint, paired with him later being handed command of the Sorcerer Kingdom’s entire standing army, says as much about his standing in Nazarick as any single fight does.

7. Sebas Tian

Not a Floor Guardian at all, and still ranked by the wiki’s own strength notes as one of the top two or three combatants after Shalltear.

Sebas holds a civilian role — Head Butler, not a combat posting — and it barely matters. When a brainwashed Shalltear went on her rampage in Season 2, Sebas was the first line of defense and held his own against her far longer than his job title would suggest anyone could. That’s the clearest single illustration in the whole series of why title and threat level diverge in Nazarick: the Guardians get the floors and the recognition, but the butler is quietly strong enough to nearly beat the strongest one of them.

8. Mare Bello Fiore

A shy druid whose terrain-altering magic is on a different scale than his combat reputation suggests.

Mare’s Yggdrasil build leaned entirely into support and battlefield-control magic, and it shows in his post-timeskip job: he’s the Guardian tasked with reshaping terrain and controlling weather across the entire Sorcerer Kingdom, not just his own floor. Spellcasters who can alter geography rather than just damage a target are rare even among Nazarick’s roster, which is why some in-universe assessments rank him a genuine contender for second- or third-strongest Guardian despite his quiet, unassuming demeanor.

9. Aura Bella Fiora

A beastmaster whose real weapon is the legendary monsters she’s tamed, not her own two hands.

Aura shares the 6th Floor with her twin Mare and specializes in ranged combat, tracking, and taming — her stable includes creatures built to rival Floor Guardians in their own right, which she deploys instead of fighting head-on whenever possible. Post-timeskip, she runs the Sorcerer Kingdom’s entire early-warning network along its borders, a job that trades her personal combat ceiling for battlefield awareness most of Nazarick doesn’t have.

10. Pandora’s Actor

A doppelganger who can copy anyone’s stats and skills perfectly — but not their gear.

Pandora’s Actor’s entire kit is imitation: point him at any known target and he can reproduce their stats and abilities with near total accuracy, which has let him stand in for Ainz himself as a decoy. The ceiling on that power is also its limit — he copies the person, not their equipment, so a target’s strength that comes from a legendary weapon or World Item doesn’t transfer. That makes him the single hardest character on this list to rank with one number: he’s exactly as strong as whoever he’s chosen to become, gear excluded.

11. Victim

The weakest Floor Guardian by every conventional stat, and still one of the most dangerous things in the tomb.

Victim, the sacrificial angel Guardian
Victim, Guardian of Nazarick’s 8th Floor. Art via Overlord Fandom wiki.

Victim is explicitly the exception the Floor Guardian article calls out by name: unlike the rest of the group, Victim is not a high-level combatant. What it has instead is Sacrifice, a one-time ability that guarantees the death of a target the instant Victim itself dies — a mechanical trump card with no dependence on level, gear, or skill difference at all. It’s the cleanest illustration in the entire series that a naive “higher level wins” model of this cast is simply wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the strongest character in Overlord?

Ainz Ooal Gown holds the top spot because the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown removes the tier limit on his undead magic and he controls every resource in Nazarick, but several of his own Floor Guardians — Shalltear Bloodfallen and the golem Gargantua chief among them — are considered stronger than him in raw, personal combat.

Is Ainz Ooal Gown the strongest Floor Guardian?

Ainz isn’t technically a Floor Guardian at all; he’s Nazarick’s ruler. Among the actual Floor Guardians, the Overlord wiki’s own strength notes point to Shalltear Bloodfallen and Gargantua as the top contenders for the strongest title, with Sebas Tian — who isn’t a Floor Guardian either — also ranked near the very top.

Has the Overlord light novel finished?

No. As of this writing, 16 of a planned 18 volumes have been published in Japanese, and author Kugane Maruyama confirmed the series will conclude at Volume 18. Yen Press’s English edition of Volume 16 released on July 18, 2023, and Volumes 17 and 18 remain unpublished.

Is there an Overlord Season 5?

Not officially. As of this writing, neither Kadokawa nor Madhouse has announced a fifth season. The Roble Holy Kingdom arc, which would have followed Season 4, was instead adapted as the film Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, which premiered on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on May 10, 2026.
