Our Take

Noah Reid

Yaga is betting that a grounded, small-town mystery can carry genuine folk-horror weight without ever showing you a literal witch’s hut on chicken legs. Kat Sandler adapted it from her own stage play, and that theatrical DNA shows: the early episodes lean on interrogation scenes and slow-build dread rather than effects, closer in spirit to True Detective than to a creature feature. Whether that restraint holds up across all eight episodes, including a two-episode finale that has to pay off the Baba Yaga framing, is the real question once episode 3 lands.

Carrie-Anne Moss

Carrie-Anne Moss as a professor with something to hide is the show’s biggest card to play, and the premiere keeps her mostly in reserve — a choice that could pay off as a slow reveal or just delay the show’s most interesting performance too long. Worth checking back in after episode 3, the first episode AMC+ is releasing as a true weekly drop rather than part of the premiere block.
