A slower, angrier Carrie, and a show that is in no hurry to get to prom
This is not a retelling of the 1976 film with a bigger budget. Mike Flanagan’s version spends six of its eight episodes on the ordinary, daily cruelty that gets Carrie White to prom night at all: a fake Instagram account, a drugging dressed up as a prank, a teacher driven out of his job, a riot. The telekinesis is almost a subplot for most of the run. If you came only for the finale, the first stretch will feel slow; if you want to understand why the finale lands the way it does, the slowness is the point.

Summer H. Howell’s Carrie and Samantha Sloyan’s Margaret White are written as two people failing each other in opposite directions, not a monster and her victim, and the show is more interested in Chris Hargensen’s social-media campaign against Carrie than in any one jump scare. It was also, in its first week, Prime Video’s most-watched show, ahead of Reacher’s own spin-off, so whatever pace complaints exist have not stopped people from finishing it.

Flanagan has talked about this as the first of three seasons, not a closed miniseries, though Prime Video has not made that official; our report from premiere week has his own words on it. For a closer argument about whether the finale’s choices actually pay off everything the first six episodes set up, our review makes the case in full — we’re keeping spoilers out of this guide on purpose. The production record has the rest of the credits.
