Four episodes, an adults-only rating, and a body count the MCU doesn’t usually allow

This is Marvel’s first TV-MA animated series, and it uses the rating. Dropping Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop and Riri Williams into a zombie outbreak lets the show kill off Avengers the main timeline can’t touch, in ways the main timeline wouldn’t show. It is a direct spin-off of the What If…? episode that first floated the premise, not a new idea built from scratch — our What If…? guide covers where the zombie virus first appeared, three seasons earlier.

Four episodes is a tight runtime for this much cast, and the show spends it on momentum rather than world-building: flashbacks fill in how each hero’s group fell, while the present-day chase keeps moving toward a device that might reverse the plague. It helps to already know these characters a little — the show assumes you’ve met Shang-Chi, Yelena Belova and Ms. Marvel elsewhere and doesn’t pause to reintroduce anyone.

Two notes before you watch. Several returning actors are not playing the roles they played elsewhere in the MCU — our report on the voice cast changes explains who was swapped and why, so this guide doesn’t need to repeat it. And a second season was confirmed for Disney+ in April 2026 with no date yet, so the four episodes you have now are not the whole story. The production record is where a release date would show up first.
