Doom’s Armor Gets Another Pass

The trailer opens close to home, with Thor picking up his own hammer before the edit cuts away to a bearded man lit in cold blue and the words “This December.” From there it goes straight to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the green-and-gold armor Marvel has already shown off this year — first glimpsed at CinemaCon in April, expanded in the full trailer that July, and detailed further at D23 in August — arms spread wide, backlit by a huge glow, with a pair of hulking armored figures standing behind him.

Firelight pours through gothic windows a moment later, which reads as Doom’s castle in Latveria, though the trailer never says so outright. This is Marvel Studios’ fourth Avengers team-up since the original film launched in 2012, and the one it replaces at the top of the franchise’s box office chase is 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide in its original theatrical run.

“Three Teams” Gets Its Own Title Card

Twice in thirty seconds, the trailer stops on green neon text: “3 Teams” and then, a few seconds later, “Will Stand As One.” It’s the clearest piece of marketing copy Marvel has put on this movie so far, matching what’s already been reported about the plot: the rebuilt Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men as three separate forces forced to combine against Doom.

In between the two title cards, Thor gets a full lightning-and-cape action beat, swinging with electricity arcing across the frame. It’s a brief moment, but it’s the only pure action beat in an otherwise dialogue- and graphics-heavy cut.

Chris Evans Gets His Biggest Moment in Any Doomsday Trailer Yet

Every prior trailer for this movie has kept Chris Evans’s return as Steve Rogers to a glimpse or two. This one doesn’t. He gets a real close-up, dressed down in a dark jacket rather than a suit, talking to someone off-camera with the kind of weight that reads as a rallying speech rather than a one-liner.

The framing and lighting on his shot don’t match anything in the July trailer or the D23 special look, which is the strongest sign this is a genuinely new piece of footage and not a recut of what Marvel has already shown.

The New Lineup Shot

One group shot is clean enough to call: Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, the white star on his chest unmistakable, standing center-frame with four others — a younger dark-haired man to his left, an Asian man and a figure in a maroon tactical suit to his right, and a blonde woman at the far edge of the frame, mostly cut off. None of the other four are identifiable enough from this angle and lighting to name with confidence, so we won’t guess.

A separate cut shows a cluster of bearded men in green tactical jackets, lit warm and indoors — a different group entirely, and nothing in the trailer or the surrounding marketing says who they are. A brief shot of a red-haired armored figure holding a long staff is too dark and too brief to identify either.

What’s New Here

Most of this trailer recuts material Marvel has already shown: Doom’s armor design was first glimpsed at CinemaCon in April, expanded in July’s full trailer and again at D23 in August, and the “three teams” concept has been reported since this summer. What’s actually new is the edit itself and the Chris Evans close-up described above, which trade outlets covering the clip also flagged as footage that hadn’t appeared in the July trailer or the D23 special look. The “3 Teams / Will Stand As One” title cards are also new — Marvel hasn’t put that exact marketing language on screen before.

This is also a different video from the Fantastic Four “first pitch” special look Marvel aired during World Series Game 1 on October 23. That footage — which reportedly includes the Fantastic Four at a ballpark, new Ant-Man and Thor cuts, and a hint of the X-Men — still has not been posted to Marvel Entertainment’s official YouTube channel as of this writing. Several outlets covered it from the broadcast, but no official embed exists yet, so there’s nothing to verify it against.

What the Trailer Doesn’t Show

A few things conspicuously absent from these 30 seconds:

  • The Fantastic Four and the X-Men, clearly. Despite the “three teams” tagline, this cut is almost entirely Avengers-side faces. Neither of the other two teams gets an identifiable shot.
  • Doom’s face under the mask. The bearded close-up early in the trailer may or may not be Robert Downey Jr. out of armor — the trailer never confirms it, and we won’t guess.
  • Any plot specifics. No dialogue is audible enough in this cut to quote, and nothing here explains why the three teams need each other.
  • The World Series special look. As noted above, that footage is still not posted officially anywhere we could verify.
