Lanterns season 2 still has no green light from HBO, even after the DC Studios series closed out its first run as one of the biggest new shows in HBO Max history. The season finale landed October 4, and the numbers behind it are putting real pressure on a decision HBO has so far refused to make.

How Big Lanterns Actually Got

Lanterns premiered to 9.3 million global viewers in its first three days, the biggest launch for any DC Studios show on HBO Max to that point, according to Variety. It kept climbing from there: episode 3 pulled in 10 million global viewers in its own first three days, a series high, and the show has averaged close to 19 million viewers per episode worldwide across its eight-episode season.

That is a real hit by streaming standards, even if it is not the biggest DC show HBO has ever run. Here is how it stacks up against the network’s other recent genre premieres.

Show U.S. premiere (3-day) Series average (global)
Lanterns (2026) 6.6 million ~19 million
The Penguin (2024) — 27+ million
It: Welcome to Derry (2026) 6.5 million 19.7 million

What HBO’s Own Boss Said About Season 2

The clearest signal so far is the least encouraging one. Asked directly whether anything else in the DC Studios TV slate was moving forward, HBO content chief Casey Bloys told Deadline: “No, not right now.” HBO has not announced a renewal, and it has not announced a cancellation either — as of the finale, Lanterns season 2 sits in the one place a show this expensive is not supposed to sit for long: nowhere.

The Writers Are Working. The Green Light Isn’t.

Behind the silence, there is real activity. Showrunner Chris Mundy has said the writers’ room has already put in roughly six weeks mapping out where a second season could go, and co-creator Damon Lindelof confirmed writers are “ideating” on season 2 stories. None of that is the same as a pickup. By Mundy’s own description, the show is still at the pitching stage, not in active development.

There’s one tease that cuts the other way. Asked on Threads whether the October 4 episode was a series finale or a season finale, James Gunn replied: “Season finale, correct.” That is not a renewal, but it is James Gunn, who runs DC Studios and approves every greenlight, on the record that the story isn’t finished.

Who Would Even Come Back

A second season also means answering a harder question than ratings: who makes it. Lindelof has indicated he does not plan to return for a second season, and co-creator Tom King is not expected back either, which would leave Mundy running the show largely on his own, though Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell has joined the season 2 writers’ room to help map out the story. Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart, is already booked elsewhere in the DCU too: he’s set to reprise the role in Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s Superman sequel starring David Corenswet, which complicates scheduling a Lanterns season 2 even if HBO says yes tomorrow.
