This is the one Avatar film you cannot walk into cold. Fire and Ash is the third chapter of a single continuous story: it opens with the Sully family living among the Metkayina reef clan, still dealing with a loss from the previous film, and it never stops to re-introduce anyone. Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) in that order are the prerequisite, and both are on Disney+ alongside this one.
The runtime is the other thing to plan around. At 197 minutes it is the longest film James Cameron has made – past Titanic and past The Way of Water – so this is an evening, not a weeknight. Cameron directed from a screenplay he wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Simon Franglen scored it, and 20th Century Studios released it in US theaters on December 19, 2025 after a December 1 world premiere at the Dolby Theatre. It reached Disney+ on June 24, 2026.
What is new here is the Ash People – the Mangkwan clan led by Oona Chaplin’s Varang, a Na’vi faction that has turned on Eywa after a volcano destroyed their home. Two films in, every Na’vi group the audience has met has been on the receiving end of the RDA; this one is not, and that is the shift the title is pointing at.
