The 32nd-century setting, and why it is a genuine entry point
Ten episodes, one season, and no prior Star Trek required. Starfleet Academy is set in the 32nd century – the far-future era that Star Trek: Discovery opened up in its last few seasons – but Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau built it for people arriving cold. The Federation in it is rebuilding rather than at its height, and the show explains that in the first hour instead of assuming you watched four seasons of another series to get there.

Structurally it is the opposite of Strange New Worlds. Where that show resets every week, this one is a single serialised year: the first two episodes went up together on January 15, 2026 and the rest arrived weekly to a March 12 finale, and the premises above are steps in one story rather than a menu. At 60 to 75 minutes an episode – long for Star Trek – the season runs about eleven hours, and it is held together by one antagonist: Paul Giamatti’s Nus Braka, a part-Klingon, part-Tellarite whose history with the Academy’s new chancellor is the reason the season starts where it does.

The draw is the cast around the cadets. Holly Hunter plays Nahla Ake, captain of the USS Athena and the chancellor reopening the Academy, and the show fills the staff with faces the franchise already owns: Robert Picardo returns as the Doctor from Voyager, Tig Notaro brings Jett Reno over from Discovery, and Oded Fehr plays Charles Vance. A ten-episode second season has been ordered for 2027 and announced as the last, so this is a two-season story rather than an open-ended one. For where Hunter’s chancellor sits against the franchise’s other commanders, our ranking of every Star Trek captain is the companion piece.
