A legal thriller wearing a Captain America movie’s costume

This is Sam Wilson’s first solo outing as Captain America, and it plays less like a superhero spectacle than a political thriller with occasional fight scenes. Anthony Mackie’s Sam has to manage a newly elected, volatile President Ross while investigating an attack that looks engineered to start a war, and the film spends real time on the weight of Sam carrying the shield without the super-soldier serum backing him up.

The film’s biggest surprise is how far back it reaches. Harrison Ford’s President Ross and Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns both began as characters in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, a film the MCU mostly left alone for seventeen years. Brave New World treats that film as live continuity, not a footnote, which makes it the rare MCU entry where a seventeen-year-old setup actually pays off rather than getting quietly retconned.

You will follow it with no homework, but it lands harder with two things seen first: the film’s own production history notes how closely it follows on from Sam’s arc across The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where he decides to take up the shield at all, and from the 2008 Hulk film for Ross and Sterns’ history. Neither is required, but both explain why two characters nobody expected back are suddenly driving the plot. Our watch guides track everything else we cover by release date.

Captain America: Brave New World trivia 5

  • Production

It was described as more grounded than some recent MCU films, closer to the tone of The Winter Soldier. The filmmakers always intended to bring back Stan for a scene with Barnes and Wilson together, but this was kept secret until the film's release. Source

  • Production

Ford was reported to be appearing as Ross in this film as well as the following MCU film Thunderbolts* (2025). Marvel Studios planned for Ross to transform into Red Hulk in the film. Source

  • Production

Rosa Salazar was cast in December 2023 to play Diamondback, a Serpent Society member, but her scenes were cut from the finished film after the production was retooled toward a more grounded thriller tone; director Julius Onah said the reshoot dates also clashed with another project Salazar was working on. Source

  • Production

Mark Ruffalo said in February 2024 that he was reprising his role as Bruce Banner / Hulk in the film, but a later Variety report clarified he had misspoken. Onah confirmed the Hulk does not appear, saying they considered including Ruffalo but felt it would take focus away from Wilson's story. Source

  • Production

Red Hulk's design reused the same digital model built for Eternals' Tiamut, "scaled down a little." Wētā FX worked with Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios' head of visual development, and visual effects supervisor Dan Cox said they did not want the character to look like a simple color-swapped Hulk. How long is Captain America: Brave New World?

118 minutes.

Do I need to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier first?

It helps but is not required. Sam Wilson’s arc from Steve Rogers’ partner to the new Captain America plays out in that Disney+ series; this film assumes he has already made that choice, but explains enough as it goes.

Is this a sequel to The Incredible Hulk?

Yes, more than any other MCU film has been. Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus Ross and Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns both return from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, picking up threads the MCU left alone for seventeen years.

When did Captain America: Brave New World come out?

February 14, 2025, in theaters.
