You need Part One, and Part Three is already coming

This is not a film you can walk into cold. Dune: Part Two picks up the exact moment Part One ends, mid-conversation, with no recap and no reintroduction of Arrakis, House Atreides or the Fremen. If the 2021 film is new to you, watch it first; Part Two assumes you already know who Paul Atreides is and why he’s living in the desert with Chani’s people.

What the second film changes is the shape of the story: Part One was survival, Part Two is the question of what Paul becomes once he survives. Denis Villeneuve stages the back half of Frank Herbert’s novel as a slow turn from chosen-one story to warning about chosen-one stories, and Zendaya’s Chani carries the film’s skepticism toward every step Paul takes. The production record has the full shoot history, including the Budapest and Abu Dhabi locations standing in for Arrakis.

A third film is already moving. Villeneuve is returning to direct a third Dune adapting Frank Herbert’s follow-up novel, Dune Messiah, for Legendary and Warner Bros., though no cast or release date is set. HBO Max’s own listing is where a sequel announcement would land first. Our watch guides track everything else we cover by release date.
