A PG rating that does not mean what it usually means
Coraline earns its reputation as the film parents put on expecting something gentle and get something else entirely. Henry Selick directed it for LAIKA from Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novella, and the stop-motion craft is the whole case for watching it on as large a screen as the stream allows: every set, every button eye and every frame of the Other Mother’s transformation was built and shot by hand, not rendered. It is rated PG. Whether that rating still fits is one of the most-argued questions about any animated film of its decade, and it is worth going in knowing that before pressing play with a younger or easily-spooked kid.

The premise is simple on its surface: a bored, overlooked 11-year-old finds a door in her new house that leads to a version of her family who seem to adore her, if she is willing to give up a little of herself to stay. Gaiman’s novella and Selick’s film diverge in several places, including the ending, so readers of the book should not assume they already know where this one goes. If Gaiman’s name is what brought you here, our Sandman watch guide covers his other major screen adaptation.

Nothing else is required to watch it: no sequel, no prequel, no shared universe. It is a complete 100-minute story, which is part of why it has become an October rewatch staple rather than a one-and-done. The film’s production record has the full history, and everything else we track by release date is in our watch guides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I watch Coraline?
Coraline streams on Hulu in the US with any subscription, confirmed by the rendered Hulu title page on October 30, 2026.
Is Coraline based on a book?
Yes. Director Henry Selick adapted Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novella of the same name, changing and expanding several characters and the ending for the film.
How long is Coraline?
100 minutes.
Is Coraline too scary for kids?
It’s rated PG, but the Other Mother, the button eyes and the film’s body-horror imagery have made it a go-to test case for what a PG rating can actually contain. Younger or easily-spooked kids may find it genuinely frightening.
Do I need to watch anything before or after Coraline?
No. It’s a standalone film with no sequel, prequel or connected franchise.
