The one piece of DC homework it is easy to get backwards

Superman & Lois is not part of the new DCU. That is worth saying plainly before anything else, because the title alone makes it an easy mix-up: James Gunn’s 2025 Superman relaunched the franchise from scratch, and this show predates it by four years and shares none of its cast, continuity or canon. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch played this Superman and Lois across several Arrowverse crossovers starting in 2018, and the finale of 2019’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” served as the show’s backdoor pilot. By the time Superman & Lois itself premieres in February 2021 and wraps up in 2024, it has quietly become its own self-contained thing: a show about raising teenagers who happen to be half-Kryptonian, set in a Smallville that looks and feels nothing like the Metropolis skyline most DC adaptations reach for.

The shape of the show is simple and it holds for all four seasons: Clark and Lois move the family back to the Kent farm, and each season layers in a new threat while keeping the real story on Jonathan and Jordan growing into, or away from, their father’s powers and legacy. It is a complete, finished run – all 53 episodes – which makes it an easier binge than most ongoing superhero television, and the HBO Max home means no hunting across services partway through.

One practical note before you start: if Jonathan Kent looks like a different actor between season 2 and season 3, that is not a clone, a recast twist or an Inverse World story beat. Jordan Elsass left the production in August 2022 for personal reasons, and Michael Bishop took over the role for the final two seasons. Both are credited below, by the seasons each one played.
