What Born Again changed mid-production, and whether you need the old series
Seventeen episodes over two seasons, and the release pattern is worth knowing. Season 1 opened with two episodes on March 4, 2025 and then went weekly to its April 15 finale; season 2 ran from March 24 to May 5, 2026. Wikipedia’s production section has an eight-episode third season in production for March 2027, so this is a run that is still going rather than a closed book.
The honest answer to the prerequisite question is that the show changed its mind about it. It was originally built as a fresh start, then overhauled in late 2023: the original head writers were released, Dario Scardapane came in as showrunner, and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead joined to direct — with the stated aim of harking back to the tone of the 2015–2018 series and continuing its storylines. That is why Foggy, Karen, Dex and the Punisher are all here.
So: you can start at episode one, because the premiere is written as a bridge and it re-establishes everyone in its first half hour. You will get more out of it having seen the Netflix run, and Wilson Fisk’s turn towards City Hall is set up in the post-credits scene of Echo — one of the entries in our ranking of the best Marvel TV shows.
