Spielberg’s first first-contact film in two decades

Disclosure Day is a new story, not a sequel to anything. Steven Spielberg hasn’t made a film built around the idea of first contact with extraterrestrial life since Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds, and this one is closer in spirit to the former: a slow-building conspiracy thriller rather than an invasion movie. David Koepp, who wrote War of the Worlds and Jurassic Park for Spielberg, wrote the screenplay, and John Williams scores it.

Emily Blunt plays a meteorologist and Josh O’Connor a government analyst, and together they start pulling on a thread that turns into a decades-long cover-up about what the government actually knows. Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo fill out the rest of the cast around them. The marketing has leaned hard on ambiguity — the tagline poses the question of whether being shown proof would actually be reassuring — and the film is built to keep that tension rather than resolve it early.
