Where to start, and what House of the Dragon needs you to know
You do not have to watch Game of Thrones first. HBO Max’s own description places this series 200 years before that one, and it tells a self-contained Targaryen succession story: a king with no son, a daughter named as heir, and a court that never quite accepts it. Knowing the later show adds irony, not information.
Season 1 is the part that trips people up, and it is a structural thing rather than a writing one. It covers decades, so it jumps years between episodes and recasts its two leads partway through: Rhaenyra and Alicent are played by younger actors early and by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke from the back half onward. Once the timeline settles at the end of season 1, seasons 2 and 3 run in something close to real time.
The schedule above is the current state of play: ten episodes in 2022, eight in 2024, and eight more from June 21 to August 9, 2026. A fourth and final season is in development and is expected in 2028, which means the 26 episodes here are a complete block to catch up on rather than a wait between weekly drops.
