The comic went one way; the show went somewhere stranger
Preacher starts from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Vertigo comic and drifts further from it every season. Jesse Custer, a small-town Texas preacher with a violent past, gets possessed by a being called Genesis that gives him a power he didn’t ask for, and sets off with his ex Tulip and a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy to find out what happened to God. The comic ran monthly from 1995 to 2000 and is one of the defining Vertigo books of that era: profane, violent, and openly hostile to organized religion in a way that got it banned from some comic shops at the time.

The AMC series, developed by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin, keeps the premise and the three leads but writes mostly new plot around them – entire seasons’ worth of story, like the second season’s road trip and the third season’s return to Jesse’s family estate, exist nowhere in the comic. the source material’s own history is worth reading if the show’s digressions work for you; fans of the comic tend to either love how far the show wanders or wish it had stuck closer to the page.

One practical upside of a finished show: there’s no cliffhanger risk here. AMC ended Preacher by design after season 4 in 2019, with the story’s endgame playing out across Australia and New Zealand, so all 43 episodes are a complete watch start to finish. If you want another dark, comic-sourced show that goes somewhere AMC+ or network television rarely goes, our Doom Patrol guide is the closest thing on our shelf, and our Invincible guide covers a different kind of comic adaptation that also refuses to play it safe.
