Shinkai’s road movie, and the one with the talking cat

Suzume trades Your Name’s body-swap premise for a road trip, and the change in structure is the whole point. Suzume, a high schooler in Kyushu, meets a stranger looking for an old door and ends up chasing him – and a small, unbothered cat named Daijin – across Japan as they try to keep a string of supernatural doors shut before whatever’s behind them gets out. It is Shinkai’s most overt disaster movie yet: each door Suzume has to close is tied, unmistakably, to a real place where something terrible once happened, and the film is explicit that it’s reckoning with the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in a way his earlier films approached more obliquely.

Daijin is the reason this film has the fanbase it does. The cat shows up early, says almost nothing, and does something to one of the main characters that reframes the whole back half of the trip – it’s a better hook unspoiled, but expect to see this cat on a lot of merchandise once you know why. the film’s production record has the full voice cast and release history, including Crunchyroll’s US theatrical run in spring 2023, several months behind the Japanese release.

You do not need Your Name first. Suzume isn’t a sequel and doesn’t reference it; what carries over is Shinkai’s visual signature and his interest in what a disaster does to the people who survive it, not a story. If you haven’t seen either, our Your Name guide covers the one that made his name internationally, and either is a fine place to start.
