A faithful adaptation, not a franchise relaunch

Welcome to Raccoon City is a reset, not a sequel. It drops the Milla Jovovich film series entirely and goes back to the first two games, Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, for its story: Umbrella’s Spencer Mansion research facility, the outbreak that follows it into Raccoon City itself, and the characters players actually controlled — Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy — rather than an original protagonist invented for the films. If your memory of Resident Evil movies is built on Jovovich’s Alice, this one will feel unfamiliar on purpose.

Writer-director Johannes Roberts shot it with the games’ own look in mind — the mansion’s corridors, the STARS insignia, the Raccoon City police station — and reviews at the time split sharply between praise for that fidelity and complaints that fidelity isn’t the same as a good movie on its own terms. The production record has the full cast and release history. It is not connected to the newer, separately produced Resident Evil reboot now in theaters; the two share a source but no cast, crew or continuity.

At 107 minutes it is a single sitting, with no games knowledge required: the plot explains Umbrella, the T-virus and the mansion’s layout as it goes. Everything else we track by release date is in our watch guides.
