Twenty-five episodes, and the shortest on-ramp in modern anime
Two seasons, under ten hours, and nothing to read first. Solo Leveling is the rare recent hit with no back catalogue attached: twelve episodes in 2024, thirteen more as Arise from the Shadow in 2025, and a premise that explains itself in the first ten minutes. A-1 Pictures starts with the weakest registered hunter in South Korea and a dungeon that goes wrong, and the entire progression the series is named for runs forward from there. Our Solo Leveling watch order covers where the recap film fits, and the two seasons in broadcast order are all the story there is so far.
That compactness is the argument for watching it now rather than later. Twenty-five episodes is one weekend; the same decision for our My Hero Academia guide is 170 episodes and about 68 hours. Under Noboru Kimura’s series composition the show is a ladder of fights, and Hiroyuki Sawano’s score does an unusual amount of the work holding that together – it is closer to a game soundtrack than a television one, and it is the reason a grinding, level-by-level structure that ought to be repetitive reads as momentum instead. Where it stands: a third season has been confirmed and has no date, so the story is unfinished, and season 2 ends on a genuine turn rather than a resting point. A recap film, ReAwakening, and a new film, Beyond the System, sit outside the two seasons, so “the two seasons” is the series but not the whole franchise. Worth knowing before you start, because the gap is likely to be long. The Crunchyroll listing is sub and dub from episode 1 in both seasons, with Taito Ban and Aleks Le splitting the lead – the dub is complete, which is not true of every simulcast on the service.
