Where Superman sits in the DCU, and what to watch after it
This is the DC Universe’s starting line, and it does not ask you to do any homework. James Gunn wrote and directed it, it opened in US cinemas on July 11, 2025, and it reached HBO Max on September 19, 2025 — a date HBO Max announced itself. At 129 minutes it is also the shortest way into the new continuity.
The practical note for a first-time viewer: it does not start with the rocket. Krypton, the Kents and the Daily Planet are all treated as things you already know, and it opens with Superman long established and already being argued about. David Corenswet plays Kal-El, Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor; the supporting bench above — Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner — is the rest of the DCU being introduced inside one film, which is the real reason this is the starting point and not just the first release.
It worked, commercially: Wikipedia’s release section puts the worldwide gross at $618.7 million against a $225 million net budget. What follows it, in release order, is Peacemaker season 2 — we have a full Peacemaker watch guide — then Supergirl in 2026, with Man of Tomorrow dated for 2027. On television the same continuity runs through Creature Commandos and Lanterns.
