A show built to need nothing else, which is why it worked
The Mandalorian’s whole pitch was that you didn’t need to have seen anything else. It opened five years after Return of the Jedi with a masked bounty hunter, a job, and a code, and it let the galaxy’s bigger history stay in the background for as long as the story could get away with it. That restraint is why the show could spend its first season on small, contained jobs – a prison break, a moisture farm, a gunfight on a dust world – instead of chasing Skywalker-sized stakes from episode one.

That changes by season 2, on purpose. The search for where the Child comes from pulls in Bo-Katan Kryze, Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett, three characters with decades of continuity behind them in the animated shows and the earlier films, and the show trusts a new viewer to follow the relationships without having done the homework. By season 3, the story has moved from a bounty hunter’s side jobs to the politics of rebuilding Mandalore itself. It is a wider show than its first eight episodes promised, and that is the clearest sign the format was working: each season could afford to ask for a little more.

Two practical notes for a new watch. The show never requires the animated series to make sense, but Ahsoka picks up several of its season 2 and 3 threads directly, and is the natural next stop if a character here catches your attention. And the series does not continue past season 3; the story moves to the big screen in Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu. The show’s production history has the full credits and release record.
