A sequel that had to answer a question no script wanted to ask
Wakanda Forever is built around an absence, not a villain. Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020 meant the film could either recast T’Challa or write around him, and Ryan Coogler chose the harder option: the first act is a nation in mourning, and the story that follows is about who Wakanda becomes without the person who defined it. That choice shapes everything else in the film, including Shuri’s arc toward the mantle and Namor’s introduction as a king defending his own people rather than a straightforward antagonist.

Namor and Talokan are the film’s best addition: an underwater nation with its own colonial-era grievance against the surface world, introduced with enough weight that the film’s back half plays as two wronged nations circling each other rather than hero versus monster-of-the-week. Riri Williams’ introduction is lighter and more comic, the clearest seed for her own spinoff series, and the film is honest that it is setting that up rather than resolving it here.

Seeing the first Black Panther first matters more here than most MCU sequels: Wakanda’s politics, vibranium’s role in the wider Marvel world, and T’Challa himself are all assumed knowledge. From here, the MCU’s vibranium and Wakanda threads continue loosely through Thunderbolts* and the wider Phase 5 slate; for another Marvel ensemble built around loss and succession, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 landed the same year. The film’s full production record is where cast and release details are kept current.
