What to watch first, and why the asterisk is there
Six people who have each been the problem in someone else’s film get put on the same job. Thunderbolts* reached theaters in May 2025, runs a little over two hours, is rated PG-13, and is now on Disney+. Jake Schreier directed it from a script by Eric Pearson for Marvel Studios, and it is the rare Marvel film built almost entirely out of characters the films had already finished with.

None of the six leads were introduced here, which is why it rewards a little homework. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and David Harbour’s Red Guardian come out of Black Widow (and if you want the character background first, we have a Black Widow powers explainer); Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes and Wyatt Russell’s John Walker come out of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier; Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost comes out of Ant-Man and the Wasp; and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina has been quietly recruiting them across all of it. That is two films and one six-episode series – call it nine hours if you want the lot, or just Black Widow if you only need Yelena and Alexei to land.

The asterisk is part of the official title rather than a typo or a footnote marker, and the film pays it off itself in its closing minutes. If you are building a Marvel catch-up list rather than working through the back catalogue, pair this with our Loki guide and our ranked list of the Marvel TV shows.
