Where Loki fits, and how much of it you actually need
Twelve episodes, two seasons, and it is the throughline. Loki ran on Disney+ from June 9, 2021 to November 9, 2023 – six episodes a season at 41 to 56 minutes each, so about ten hours in total. Michael Waldron created it, Kate Herron directed the first season, and it picks up at a precise moment: the version of Loki who grabs the Tesseract and disappears during Avengers: Endgame.
That is the whole prerequisite. If you have seen Endgame, start at season 1 episode 1 and keep going; the two seasons are one continuous story with no recap episode and no reset in between. What the series builds is the Time Variance Authority and the machinery behind the multiverse – the furniture the rest of the current Marvel slate keeps borrowing, from Deadpool & Wolverine onward.
On where it sits next to the films: no Marvel film asks you to have watched Loki first, and Loki asks nothing of you after Endgame. It is a self-contained ten hours that happens to explain more of the multiverse than any of the films bothered to.
