A Spider-Man show that is actually about being a sophomore

The best thing this series does is slow down. Ten episodes cover what most Spider-Man origin stories burn through in twenty minutes: a new school, a new best friend, a crush who already has a boyfriend, and a once-in-a-lifetime internship that turns out to come with strings attached. The powers and the first costume show up fast, but the show spends most of its runtime on Peter’s actual life, which is the thing that makes the hero stuff land when it arrives.

The internship is the engine of the season. Oscorp recruits Peter alongside three other teenage geniuses, ostensibly to mentor them, and the workplace politics of that arrangement end up mattering as much as any supervillain. Harry Osborn starts as a rich-kid cameo and becomes one of the show’s better arguments for why Peter needs friends who know who he is. The season also finds room for a Brooklyn gang subplot that runs almost entirely separate from the Oscorp story until the two collide, which is a more patient structure than most ten-episode seasons attempt.

It is a Disney+ animated series rated TV-PG, so it plays younger and brighter than the Spider-Man stories built around Tom Holland or the comics themselves, but the character work holds up for anyone who liked the show’s own production history and the central question it keeps asking: what happens when a teenager gets a very powerful adult sponsor who is not entirely who he says he is. Season 2 is already confirmed; our season 2 report covers who’s joining the cast. For everything else we’re tracking by release date, see our full watch guide hub.
