The funniest action anime on Netflix is also one of its best-kept secrets
The pitch sounds like a one-joke premise: the world’s most feared hitman retires, gets fat, and now runs a convenience store. What makes Sakamoto Days work across 22 episodes is that it never treats that joke as the whole show. Taro Sakamoto is still the most dangerous person in every room he walks into, he just does it while holding a paper bag of groceries, and the show finds a genuine action sequence inside that contradiction almost every episode.

The first eleven episodes keep things close to home: Sakamoto’s bounty draws a parade of hitmen to his store, his clairvoyant new clerk Shin and the mafia-orphan Lu round out the cast, and the fights mostly stay personal and small-scale. The back eleven widen the lens considerably, introducing the Order, a cabal of elite assassins, and an entrance exam arc that puts Sakamoto and Shin undercover among a plane full of teenage killers. It’s a meaningful tonal shift, and the show earns it by keeping the comedy and the family stakes intact the whole way.

Animation is handled by TMS Entertainment, and the show leans hard into exaggerated, almost rubbery action choreography that suits the source manga’s style. The series record has the full production history, and the episode list is where a season 2 date will show up first once Netflix sets one — a second season was already announced for January 2027. If you want a primer on who actually wins the fights, our strongest characters ranking is spoiler-light through part 1, and our season 2 trailer breakdown covers the new faces joining the cast.
