The short verdict
Episode 46 is the strongest instalment of The Calamity so far because it stops adapting Tite Kubo’s final arc in order and starts editing it. It braids two fights that the manga tells in separate blocks into a single argument about choice, and it gives that argument to Uryu Ishida rather than to Ichigo. The one misjudgement is a cutaway nobody needed.
I am not scoring this. This site does not run a numbered scale on weekly episodes, and inventing one for a single review would make the number meaningless.
What happens in Bleach TYBW episode 46
“THE END” opens in Karakura Town, where Tatsuki Arisawa wakes in tears without knowing why, then returns to Wahrwelt. Yhwach undoes Orihime Inoue’s sacrifice, Uryu reveals his Schrift against Haschwalth, and Ichigo’s counterattack collapses. The episode ends with the Sternritter Grandmaster’s fight resolved.
In more detail: Orihime’s Rokuten Shishun had erased both herself and Yhwach from existence at the close of episode 45. Episode 46 undoes it. Yhwach returns with a wounded Orihime and explains that The Almighty does not merely show him the future — it lets him choose a different one, which he describes as grains of sand scattered outward from the present rather than a single road. Below, Haschwalth explains that dawn returned his borrowed power to Yhwach seconds before Uryu could exploit it.
Uryu answers with Antithesis, which reverses events between two points and briefly leaves Haschwalth bleeding and Uryu whole. Haschwalth counters with The Balance and the Freund Schild, redirecting his own misfortune back onto Uryu. Above, Ichigo reaches his true Bankai; Yhwach breaks it in one motion, then tears through the friends standing behind him. Haschwalth, robbed of his power by an Auswahlen, asks Uryu for one last thing before he dies.
The episode belongs to Uryu — and the credits prove it
Episode 46 is built around Uryu Ishida even though Ichigo gets the power-up, the impalement and the screaming. The clearest evidence is not in the episode at all. It is the poem that runs after the credits, and which volume of the manga the production reached back into to find it.
Every Thousand-Year Blood War episode closes on one of Kubo’s volume poems. According to the Bleach Wiki’s episode notes, episode 46 is the only one in the entire 46-episode run whose poem is drawn from a volume published before the arc’s own volumes began. The poem it uses is the one from volume 4, QUINCY ARCHER HATES YOU — the volume that introduced Uryu Ishida to the series in the first place:
“We are drawn to each other / Like drops of water, like the planets / We repulse each other / Like magnets, like the colors of our skin.”

That is a callback across roughly 650 chapters, and it is aimed at one relationship. Volume 4 is not merely an early volume — its title chapter, chapter 34, is the chapter in which Uryu enters the series at all, introducing himself to Ichigo as a Quincy who hates Soul Reapers. The poem printed on that volume is the series stating the attraction-and-repulsion idea before the two of them have exchanged more than a few lines. Placing it over the episode where Uryu finally answers the question of what he is — by telling Haschwalth he chose his friends without weighing whether the choice was correct — is not a coincidence. It is the production telling you whose episode this was.
The editing supports the same reading. Haschwalth spends the episode interrogating Uryu about what shape his choices have given him, and Yhwach spends it telling Ichigo that hope is real precisely because the future is a cloud of possibilities. Those are the same speech. Cutting between them turns two separate manga fights into one conversation, and only one of the two participants actually answers. Ichigo screams; Uryu says he chose.
What the anime changed from the manga
Episode 46 does not adapt a run of consecutive chapters. Per the Bleach Wiki’s chapter mapping, it takes partial pages from eight non-consecutive chapters — 672, 674, 675, 677, 678, 679, 680 and 681 — skipping three entirely and reordering what it keeps. That is a rewrite of the sequence, not a transcription of it.
This matters because the manga’s final arc is widely criticised for compressed pacing, and the anime has never hidden that it is fixing that. In a 2023 interview with Febri (reported in English by EpicStream), series director Tomohisa Taguchi said that while reading the Thousand-Year Blood War arc he wished several fight scenes had been longer, so the team chose to expand them — with Kubo himself cooperating on the anime-original material. Episode 46 is what that policy looks like at the level of editing rather than animation.

The Auswahlen change is the most consequential one. In the manga it is housekeeping — Yhwach reclaiming power on his way out. Here it is causal: he takes Haschwalth’s power at the exact moment he needs it, and says so. That single reordering is what lets Ichigo’s true Bankai be broken in the same breath it is drawn, and it is why the moment plays as inevitability rather than as a cheat.
One production detail worth flagging for anyone who felt the flashbacks looked unusually polished: the Bleach Wiki notes that the footage of Ichigo’s earlier fights against Byakuya Kuchiki, Ulquiorra Cifer and Kugo Ginjo is repurposed from a franchise anniversary commemoration rather than from the corresponding episodes of the original anime. It is a montage of a montage — and it is the reason those three clips match the current show’s look instead of clashing with it.
Where episode 46 misfires
The episode’s worst decision is the cutaway to the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. It is anime-original, it arrives while Yhwach is dismantling the cast, and it spends its screen time on technicians explaining a Reishi boundary problem to each other. It is the only stretch of the episode with no argument in it.
It also has a cost elsewhere. Writing at Jam Circuit, critic Kennedy Michael King scored the episode 9/10 and praised its handling of free will, but noted that “minor characters like Chad and Ganju receive minimal attention.” That is true, and it is not a separate problem — Yasutora Sado and Ganju Shiba are dispatched in roughly a shot each in an episode that found time for three lab technicians. Sado has been with this story since chapter one. He deserved more than a pillar of darkness through the chest while the camera was busy elsewhere.
I part company with King on one point. He reads the episode as less dramatic than episode 45 but richer thematically. I would put it the other way round: episode 45 was a single enormous gesture, and 46 is the one that has to make the gesture mean something. The reason Renji’s death lands as brutally as it does — King rightly calls it horrifying, shot without the stylisation that softened the previous episode’s violence — is that the episode has spent twenty minutes establishing that choices are real. Then it shows you what happens when someone can edit them.

Four episodes of The Calamity remain. Part 4 runs weekly on Saturdays and concludes on September 26, 2026, which puts episode 50 as the final episode of the Thousand-Year Blood War anime. Episode 47 is titled “THE END 2.”
