The bulk tiers are the cheapest route but carry a 25-book minimum. Below that threshold you pay the standard Modern or Vintage rate.
Note how the tier is chosen: it is driven by your book’s declared value, not by your preference. A comic worth more than $400 cannot go in a Modern submission regardless of when it was published. Declared value is your responsibility to set honestly, and it determines both the tier and the insurance on the return trip.

The add-on fees people forget
- Handling fee: $5 per invoice for online submissions, $8 for paper forms. Charged per invoice, not per book — so it shrinks per-book as your batch grows.
- Fast Track: +$15 per book, roughly halving the standard turnaround.
- Imaging: $5 per book, adds two days to your tier’s turnaround.

- JSA authentication: $30 per signature.
- Own shipping account: $4 fee if you use your own carrier account.
- Shipping both ways: charged at cost and scaled to declared value and insurance. This is the line item that varies most and the one CGC’s price table cannot quote for you.
What one comic actually costs to grade
The single most common mistake is budgeting the tier price and stopping there. Here is the honest arithmetic for a standard Modern book:

This is why grading a single modern comic is almost always a bad financial decision. The fixed costs — handling, two-way shipping, packaging — do not shrink when your batch does. They are the same whether you send one book or twenty, which means the per-book overhead on a solo submission is brutal, and the per-book overhead on a full box is close to trivial.
The practical rule: grade in batches or do not grade at all. If you have one book you think is worth slabbing, the right move is usually to wait until you have a stack, not to send it alone.
Our take: the membership tier most collectors pick is the wrong one
CGC offers four membership levels, and a paid one is not required — the free tier includes full submission privileges. But the discount math on the paid tiers contains a genuine trap.

Read that table carefully, because it contains a result most collectors miss: Associate is dominated by Premium.
Both tiers give the identical 10% grading discount. Associate costs $39. Premium costs $159 but includes a $150 credit with CGC — bringing its effective cost down to roughly $9 for anyone who actually spends that credit. You pay $30 less in real terms for the same discount, provided you use the credit on grading you were going to buy anyway.
The caveat matters: if the credit expires unused, Premium is simply the more expensive option and Associate wins. So the question is not “which tier is cheapest” but “will I reliably spend $150 with CGC this year?” If yes, Premium. If you are unsure you will submit at all, stay on Free.
Elite is a volume play. It costs about $170 more in effective terms than Premium and buys an extra 10% off, which means it breaks even at roughly $1,700 of annual grading spend — on the order of 57 Modern books a year. Below that, you are paying for a discount you will not use enough to recover. Above it, Elite is straightforwardly correct.
Run your own number before subscribing: divide the extra membership cost by the extra discount percentage, and that is the grading spend you need to justify it. Most collectors who buy Elite have not done that division.
Is grading worth the cost at all?
Grading adds value in two situations: when the book is scarce or valuable enough that certified condition materially changes the price, and when you intend to sell into a market where buyers will not trust an ungraded description. For a common modern comic worth $20, a $35-plus all-in grading cost destroys the economics before you start.
