What do critics like about Star Wars Zero Company?

Almost everyone agrees the tactics are the real deal. Think XCOM with a Clone Wars coat of paint, plus a squad you get attached to between missions. PC Gamer gave it 90/100 and called it “a new all-timer Star Wars game,” while IGN’s 9/10 review praised how it brings over the cinematic look of Respawn’s Jedi games. GameSpot (8/10) called it “an excellent tactics game in its own right,” not just a Star Wars skin on someone else’s idea.

The between-mission stuff gets love too. GamesRadar+ compared life aboard your ship to the Normandy in Mass Effect, and Metro GameCentral went furthest, calling it “the best Star Wars strategy game ever.” A few critics also like that it’s a grimy story about soldiers for hire rather than Jedi, closer in mood to Andor than to the prequels.

What are the biggest complaints?

The story splits people. Game Informer (8/10) liked it overall but wished “the story had just a bit more juice,” and Shacknews (7/10) was blunter, calling some of it “uninspired Star Wars-themed storytelling.” The Guardian thought the scripted story and the stories that come out of your own battles pull against each other.

Replay value is the other recurring note. IGN’s review says it may not have the staying power that kept XCOM 2 in rotation for years, though the campaign is long enough to be worth a couple of runs.

Is Star Wars Zero Company buggy on PS5?

The lowest scores mostly come down to performance, and PS5 gets it worst. Push Square gave it a 7/10 and pointed to “poor technical performance, with visual snags and unfortunate bugs,” and TheSixthAxis (also 7/10) said bugs got in the way of the actual gameplay. DualShockers, which still gave it a 9, flagged occasional balancing and interface issues.

Here’s the part most roundups skip: the platform split lines up with the price. PC holds the highest Metascore (85) and is also the cheapest version at $49.99 on Steam, while PS5 has the lowest Metascore (83) and costs $59.99. If you’ve got a decent PC, that’s the version critics liked most, and it’s $10 cheaper. On console, Xbox scored a touch better than PS5 on Metacritic.

Who should play Star Wars Zero Company?

If you’ve ever lost a weekend to XCOM, this is an easy call: the reviews that loved it loved the tactics first and the Star Wars second. If you mostly want a big Star Wars story, it’s less of a sure thing, because the story is exactly where the 7/10 reviews dig in. And if you’re on PS5 and bugs drive you up the wall, there’s no harm in waiting for patches or a sale.

If you came for the Star Wars games conversation, it’s worth comparing with Star Wars: Galactic Racer’s 88 Metascore, which arrived in October. And if the grimy, boots-on-the-ground tone is what sells you, our Andor watch guide is the TV version of the same mood.
