Why Is Season 2 the Final Season?
The renewal-then-cancellation timeline here trips a lot of people up, so here’s the short version. Paramount+ renewed Starfleet Academy for season 2 back in 2024, before season 1 had even premiered. Season 1 debuted in January 2026 to mostly positive reviews but weak streaming-chart numbers, and in March 2026 Paramount+ confirmed the show would end after season 2. By that point season 2 was already shot, so instead of shelving it, Paramount+ is still airing it as the series’ planned send-off.
That means season 2 isn’t a victim of a last-minute pull — it’s a finished, filmed season that gets to close out the story on its own terms, with a January-2026-announced cast expansion to see it through.
Who’s Joining the Cast for Season 2?
Bill Nighy (Living, About Time) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Untamed, The Staircase) are joining as guest stars for season 2, playing the parents of two cadets from the Academy’s existing cast. Paramount+ released first-look photos of both on October 10, 2026, the same day it confirmed the March 2027 premiere window at New York Comic Con.
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Bill Nighy | Nyk Ake, Cadet Nahla’s estranged father |
| Rosemarie DeWitt | Laytha Sadal, Cadet Tarima’s mother and First Lady of Betazed |
How Many Episodes Is Season 2?
Season 2 runs 10 episodes, matching season 1’s episode count. Season 1 aired over about 2 months, from January 15 to March 12, 2026, so a similar weekly rollout would put season 2’s finale roughly two months after its March 2027 premiere.
Where Can I Watch Starfleet Academy Season 2?
Season 2 streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the US, the same as season 1. No other platform has picked up streaming rights, so a Paramount+ subscription will be the only way to watch the cadets’ final year when it premieres in March 2027.
